Pickup trade for Suburban???

I have a 71 4x4 longbed Custom Deluxe 1/2 ton PU I've had for almost 20 years. It's a rust free AZ truck with AC, tilt, PS, PB, 3:73 gears, and a ton of stuff I've done to it like a 700R4 w/custom cooling and spin-on filter, 6" all spring lift, top end engine upgrade, headers, HEI, etc. The paint and interior both need replacing, but other than that it's solid. I have the oppurtunity to trade for a 72 Suburban, 4x4, with front/rear AC (doesn't work), Dana 60 front, 14 bolt Corporate w/limited slip, 10" lift (7" spring, 3" body), custom stereo, 383 stroker w/400 AT. It does have a little cancer in normal places. I have a family of 4, so we can't get everybody into the PU, which is one of the reasons for looking to trade, and I have a trailer to haul the big things I wouldn't be able to get in the back. This guy wants ~$1500 on top of my truck to trade. Anybody have some opinions on a trade like this?

Re: Pickup trade for Suburban???

Yep Keep your pick up. Buy a station wagon.............That suburban is not worth that trade. Give him 1250 for the sub and keep your truck. my.002% You are giving your pick away with his deal.

Re: Pickup trade for Suburban???

I would keep on lookin...It sounds like your truck is worth a lot more $$$ than the burb. But then again maybe the burbs are worth more $$$. Others will chime it with better info. Good Luck.

Re: Pickup trade for Suburban???

I would be pretty hard pressed to sell a truck I have owned for 20 years. Burbs are kind of cool (after the A/C is fixed), but you don't want trader's remorse if you later learn the burb isn't as nice as it seemed when it belonged to someone else.

Pictures may be helpful if you are leaning toward the trade.

My heart leens toward the Suburbans, but I would not do that trade. Just find a nice two wheel drive Suburban for a couple thousand?

Re: Pickup trade for Suburban???

I wouldn't do that trade, because it sounds like your truck is in good shape... everything's there and works. Where as the burb seems to be in slightly poorer condition. As everyone has said, bodywork is harder than mechanical work, especially rust control, and if you plan on owning the vehicle for another 20 years you'd want to take care of the rust before it gets too far.

Do you have pics of both???

Here are pics of both. That was some of my thinking also as far as knowing everything about my truck, and I'm the second owner also!

Re: Pickup trade for Suburban???

i agree with big al.

otherwise, i wouldn't trade. like you, i like 4x4 burbs. but you know the history of your truck. besides, you say there really isn't any rust on yours, and the usual rusty places on the burb. so there would be lots of work to get it to the same place as what you are currently in.

Re: Pickup trade for Suburban???

I second the trading straight up. His does have the one ton axels which is a plus if you do any 4 wheeling. Yours I would say is worth just as much as his since yours dosent need anything and his need a/c and rust repair.

Re: Pickup trade for Suburban???

I'd say straight up, but not much more. The AC isn't too big of a deal to fix, and the burb is essntually a 1-ton, and will wheel and survive better than the 1/2 ton would. I'd say his rig w/383, lift etc etc is worth about the same so straight up or not at all. On the other hand sell your's and buy his, maybe you can make some $$$ over what he wants cash, but I doubt it, in the economy a long bed 4X4 may not do too well??

BTW the truck and Burb are both nice!!

Re: Pickup trade for Suburban???

I'd analyze the rust situation of the burb closely before commiting to anything! What looks like minor rust could be major upon further investigation.

It'd be hard for me to turn loose of a truck that I had owned for 20yrs...What's he want for the burb straight up?

It's easy to sink 800-1200 in repairing old air conditioners...rust repair is even more expensive.

I'd think that you could probably find a burb without the heavy duty running gear for not much more then what he wants for boot on the swap....Of course I don't know squat about burb values. But seriously, how much would a burb in need of rust repair with nonfunctioning A/C be worth (less the heavy duty running gear and lift)?

Re: Pickup trade for Suburban???

I would keep the truck. For years now I have wanted something bigger to throw the family in, but here in three years the son is out and one to go. I am glad I stayed with the single cab. I have had my Longhorn for 10 years and refuse to even trade it for a GEM. That guy sounds like a rip off wanting to much. A 20 year investment speaks volume and it is your sweat and time that has been invested to make it what it is today. Good Luck on the choice.

Re: Pickup trade for Suburban???

I dunno, man, your truck doesn't look rust-free and that 'Burb looks pretty sweet...I bit high in the air but a real head turner, and useful for a family too....

I'd sleep on it.

Though, I HATE body lifts...

Re: Pickup trade for Suburban???

as I read your first post I was thinking he would pay you the $1500. I say no to trade plus money. I think the straight across is really even a no go - as you have owned your for so long.

I think he has been trying to sell that thing for a long time. If it is the one out of
Scottsdale, it has been on Craigs for along time.

good luck
