700R4 Astro/ Safari?

I have been watching for good used 700R4, ideally from truck. I have not found reasonable priced one, but I see LOTS of Astros/Safari's being parted out with good trans, from 88 to present. Cheap trans, most owners do not know that they are 700R4s.

I know the van had V6, can I bolt up to my 350? Will it have correct tail shaft length? Will TV cable be correct? WIll V6 flex plate bolt up to my 350? ANy other 'gotchas'?

THNKS,

Steve

i know with the newer trans there are two v6 patterns. the big six will work with the small block. but has weaker internals

Re: 700R4 Astro/ Safari?

The Astro and the 1500 pickup have the same tow capacity (5500lbs), why would one have weaker internals? THat doesnt make sense to me...

not sure I was looking for a trans for my truck. whent to the salvage yard and asked them. they said it would work but theinternals dont hold up well. hmmmm no no I got it wrong....the big six are the same...when you get to the 4l60/e you can swap bell housings with the small six but the internals are not the same.....sorry I had it wrong

Yes it will. The inline 6 uses the same trans bolt pattern as the small block V8, big block V8 and 4.3 V6 engines use.

Re: 700R4 Astro/ Safari?

I found a guy who has a 93 astrovan for sale for $500...seems desperate for money. He says he has an extra transmission that came with it when he bought it. Would it make sense to buy that for $75 and have it rebuilt?

Re: 700R4 Astro/ Safari?

if you got it for 75 that good. a core cost that anyway. but if it has power windows there is a mod for you to use the motors and your stock door parts...so yeah there are some good parts there

Re: 700R4 Astro/ Safari?

you can do a search but long story short. the gear lines up on the stock door risers. so you can mount the motor in the location of the stock gear and it will raise it up.. Ill see if I can get my hands on some and do a play by play
