70 to 68 suspension swap

I found a 5 lug 1970 LWB C-10 truck with heavy duty suspension that had a 396/TH400 in it originally. Is there anything that would prevent the complete rear end and front hubs from swapping on to my 68 to replace the 6 lug setup? I have been told the axle widths are different? Will this stick way out on my '68 swb? Thanks!

Re: 70 to 68 suspension swap

There were 2 widths for 1970. The early 1970 will be the same width as the 68. The later 70 will be the same as 71-72. It`s not that much wider overall and shouldn`t cause any problems depenfding on wheel/tire size.

Re: 70 to 68 suspension swap

There are guys that will put spacers on the older style rear ends to widen them - I'm thinking about doing it to my '67.

Re: 70 to 68 suspension swap

Thanks for the help. Also, what is the best way to switch out the rear brake lines..any tips on that? and should I use the trailing arms on the rearend from my truck or the donor truck, or does it matter? Thanks!!

Re: 70 to 68 suspension swap

1970 trucks had 6lugs and drum brakes// so that 70 doesnt have 70 stuff on it to start out so who knows what you'll end up with

Re: 70 to 68 suspension swap

Use the best pair of trailing arms.Or the ones from the donor since they will be out and can be cleaned and painted easier. You can also replace the bushings and all then have the truck down for a shorter period to do the swap. The brake lines are a bit different from year to year but I'm not familiar with which is which.Ooop's cdowns spotted something i didn't.
