Unhappy Well my rearend blew out (I think)

Well after I got out of school today I took my truck around my circle drive to move it into the garage to start welding on my patch pannels and I hear CLA- CLUNK and my engine rapps out. Im in the street at this point I hop out thinking oh no my tranny hopped out of gear. I see behind me a big puddle of antifreeze I crawl under it to see if mabey my linkage poped off from the tranny or something , nope it's all good. I burn my wrist on my header and looking back I see my drive shaft spinning freely . This is when I figure the rearend shelled. I add a bunch of water to my radiator and let it cool down for awhile. I come back out ten mins later and start it back up running it through the gears ......nothing! it won't move. I called my neighbor and they helped me push it back into the driveway.

How much work is it and is it worth it to try to find a F*RD 9 inch?

So it looks like i'll be on craigslist looking for a new rearend for under $100 or try to sell my guitars for some more cash to avoid having to try to get my parents to loan me any money. Looks like it may be sitting for a few weeks until my summer job starts.

Re: Well my rearend blew out (I think)

You should be able to find a rear end for next to nothing. Plenty of 10 bolt open 2.73 and 3.08 out there that will bolt in and get you down the road.

Re: Well my rearend blew out (I think)

I picked up a stock 12 bolt for $75 off a guy here local parting a Burban. Look for one of them. There is almost always some out in this area if you can't seem to find one near you. Road trips are fun, you know?

Any 73-87 2wd truck (73-82 Blazer)will work. You can look for 73-91 2wd Burbs as well.

Search your local Craigslist for Suburbans. They seem to be the most common that are being parted out.

Here is one- LINK

Re: Well my rearend blew out (I think)

If you swap your 5 lug axles and drums (put your old ones in the replacement housing), you can use one from a 4x4 too. You have to be a little more selective then and use a 10 bolt if thats what you already have or a 12 bolt if that's what you have. Also, if you have a 10 bolt, the 88 and up will have a different axle spline count than what you have.

You have lots of options and should easily be able to get a replacement rear end for $100 or less.

So 10 bolt axels and drums will fit a 12 bolt? Not quite aure what you were trying to say.

No.

10 bolt 5 lug axles are interchangable with 10 bolt 6 lug axles through 87.

12 bolt 5 lug axles are interchangable with 12 bolt 6 lug axles.

The drums themselves are interchangeable between bolt patterns on both axles (for the same size brakes...)

A friend of mine had that exact thing happen last month. Got gears and cross shaft from a bone yard for $25.

Re: Well my rearend blew out (I think)

Well I have a 12 bolt 5 lug rearend and a steering column being delievered to my house today . I found a guy who will trade me them for some impala tail lights I have.

The truck was a heavy half so did it just have a beefed up suspension to get that designation?

Re: Well my rearend blew out (I think)

Heavy Half was more than just suspension. There's a thread here outlining it but in short it was 3/4 ton springs, larger rear breaks, larger brake booster, 2 piece drive shaft, extra frame crossmembers, double hump transmission crossmember, very little if any emissions equipment and an increased gross vehicle weight rating.

If that rear is really is from a heavy half, it will have the wider rear brakes. Something to also note is that most heavy half trucks also had an upgraded rear end gear, numerically higher than the usual 2.73 or 3.08. No telling whats in it but you might get lucky.

Re: Well my rearend blew out (I think)

for whatever reason i know of a bunch of guys who have these kind of gears blow... astro vans are notorious for them blowing.... My buddy who is good at this kind of stuff was able to find a whole list of cars and trucks that have the same type of gears so he could pull the gears out of those rears *it was an astro van and any 10 bolt gm will work i think) and always had a couple of sets laying around

I think doing a few to many burn outs may have attributed to the faliure of my rear end.
