Crew Cab and Suburban Frames
Does anyone know if a 1976 era crew cab frame is the same as a suburban frame??

the crew cabs wheel base is about 14' and the subs are about the same as a std cab

only if you use the front part of the burb frame and mate it to the back half of a shortbed frame, did this fo a friend a couple months ago

My dad and I just got done welding together a Suburban frame and a short bed truck frame. We measured it out perfectly so that we cut the frame in a straight section of the frame and were able to mount the rear cab mounts in the right place. All the holes line up even for the gas tank. Its like the factory short bed crew cab frame Chevy never made. I don't think it matters but mine is a 1/2 ton now. The old frame crew cab long bed frame was 3/4 ton.
I have never heard of anyone doing this, but my dad came up with the idea after seeing a guy that built crew cab rock crawler with a flat bed... all on a Suburban frame. |

That can be done, but you'll have a bed about 3-4' or so long.

Our frame does not require a 3-4' long bed. Its a standard short bed now. We measured for that exact reason. Its what a CCSB frame would be from the factory.

There are a few crew cab short beds done by members of this site. Rick (TooManyToys) did one with a stepside bed.

Oh, I see. Well, as far as the cab goes, the front-most body mounts on the cab will go right to the same on the frame. This will locate your cab where it needs to be on the frame (naturally, the core support will be correct also. I know this much to be right, as I cut up a burb right next to my crew cab and measured it out for an idea I abandoned
What I don't know (cuz I didn't measure) is if the middle mounts on the cab line up on the frame right, and I'm pretty sure that the rear-most cab mounts will NOT line up with anything on the burb frame. It wouldn't be difficult to fab up some cab mount perches, and the front ones will locate the cab for you, so at least you have that. Burb rear doors are the same as crew cabs, so you shouldn't have much trouble with the back tires getting into the cab, unless your tires are monstrous.

Yea, the rear most cab mounts on the crew cab are just like the rear mounts on a standard cab- they are more inboard than the others, sitting on a crossmember. On a Suburban, the 'cab' doesn't end there (so to speak), and if I remember correctly, what would be the last set of mounts on a crew cab are still on the outboard side of the Burb frame (I may be wrong, so if anyone knows, let us know). If I'm not mistaken though, you should be able to take that crossmember from a truck frame and easily install it to the Burb frame for your rear mounts.
What are your plans for the bed?

So the only difference between a 3/4 ton burb and a 1/2 ton is running gear? i guess they didn't plan on burbs carrying too much weight.

Is there a reason you are so set on the Suburban frame for under a crew cab? If you already have a crew cab with a frame under it the easiest way is to just shorten the frame. I did mine and it came out excellent! it was within 1/16" of an inch from being exact from side to side. I put all half ton suspension under it. Mine has a 4bt with a 4L80 transmission and a Compushift controller with 3.73 rear gears. I love the truck!

I'm not set on anythin I was just cntemplating different things and wondered if the 3/4 ton burbs had a heavier frame like 3/4 and 1 ton truck do. How much did you take out of the frame to make yours? I'd actually much rather like to have a 3/4 ton frame as I plan on running a 6bt of some sort. Do you have a build tread on your truck?
