That shifter knob indcates a NP203, Is it a iron case with a big aluminum tailhousing and a funky linkage setup?

Re: What transfre case do i have?

i would bet it's not a 205 being a half ton. my bet is a 203, especially if it has the shift pattern shown in the flyer. 203 is a full time case, that's why there's not 2wd. need a pic from the back

Re: What transfre case do i have?

From what i've read a 203 and 205 look alike. I was told the easiest way to tell is the idler shaft has a 3 bolt cover on the back of the t-case.

Re: What transfre case do i have?

You have a 203 if that`s the pattern you have and the same shifter. It`s full-time.Do your hubs have lock-outs?If they don`t,it`s still fulltime. If it has lock-out hubs,it has been converted(good idea). They operate off a drive chain rather than all gear. The chain can stretch and need replaced.

Re: What transfre case do i have?

In stock form a 1979 with automatic transmission will have a 203 transfer case. Being a 1979 it will have the updated chain/gears which started part way through the 1978 model year. The chain is narrower and the gears have a much steeper pitch to eliminate slippage when showing some wear. GM squarebodies did not use the 205 with the automatic transmission until the 1980 model year,(all models got the 205 in 1980). GM used the 205's in 1 ton K/V models through 1991).

Nope, no lock-outs. Thanks for the info!

Some did. I parted out a '73 K20 that came with a TH350/205. I am not sure if this was even an option by '79 though.

Re: What transfre case do i have?

Full-time 4wd was an option. An automatic truck could have the 205 and lockouts.

Full time 4x4 was standard with automatic transmission.
