installing posi carrier
I have a 67 with a 4.11 posi rear and have wanted higher gears for a while. I found a 3.73 open diff, but would like to keep my posi. How difficult is it to swap in my posi carrier into the open diff. I have had people tell me that they just swapped the carriers using the shims that were on the carrier they were swappin in. What are the chances of doing that? I could also swap the gears into my existing rear axle onto my posi carrier if there is a better chance of success. Let me know if anyone has done this swap.
Thanks

Re: installing posi carrier
Well, my experience with trying to set up my own rearend ended up in me taking it to a shop to get rid of the howling noise! I even had the contact pattern right (or so I thought) and checked the backlash, etc.. I've witnessed said shop swap carriers on their own shop truck (going from open to posi) and had to use a different shim pack. Basically, with changing the gears onto your carrier and existing housing, everything will need to be set up from square 1. Crush sleeve, shims, etc. Are you gonna reuse any bearings? I would say you would be extremely lucky if it just happened to go back together and not make noise.

Re: installing posi carrier
Thanks, that was what I needed to know. I think I may just swap in the 3.73 open diffy, then when I have the time to play with it move the other spare 3.73 gears into my original rear end.
