Needing some advice on my 64
ok well im building a 64 2wd and have the option of putting a 283,327or a 383stroker...wat would be the best as far as a quick street truck...and im looking to procharge it in the future...all the advice will be greatly appreciated...thanx

No reason to even consider the 283 unless you were looking to make something a 100% stock / original show truck. It's a lame duck especially in a heavy truck like this.
But I don't think you want a 383 either,, nope,, it would put too big of a smile on your face, start that long arduous journey down that road to faster faster faster where you eventually end up down at the plasma bank selling plasma to buy more faster faster faster parts,, and you will end up being that guy sitting the Walmart parking lot that holds the sign saying: Quote:

400 blocks are harder to come by that 350 blocks and weaker.
If you do a stout 400 buy a dart block. They have a new one thats a little cheaper.

thats my problem ive been looking for a good 400 block for over 2 years!
i think i will just save up 5 grand and buy a motown 454 sbc

The 434,, sure, a PITA but a very economical way to get to 650-700HP if everything you already own is SBC. But the raised deck sbc deals, or anything more than a 4" stroke,, it's just too much headache, too much specialized components, machine work. And it will eat into your budget just as much as starting fresh with a BBC. But suuuush, don't tell the BBC guys I said that!!!If you want a 400 block that is very friendly to 3.875" stroke, that Dart SHP block Kevin is talking about is a VERY stable platform for up to 600-700HP. I just finished a 434 in one and it's pretty tight for a 4" stroke. Plenty of clearancing in places I don't like to clearance. But with the right rod / stroke combination 3.875" for a 421" large bore SBC,,,, it's the berries! For $1500 it's it's about what it would cost in machine work for everything you do to a old stock GM casting to make it not nearly as stout. The SHP is splayed mains, main priority oiling, decked square to the mains, blind head bolt holes, THICK deck, trued up bore spacing, true main saddles,, everything but the final hone. I have been using Motown blocks for 4" stroke 434's. I know they had a bad QC rep a few years ago, but I've not seen anything out of line or had any fail. With a Lunati ProMod rod, or a Olivers rod it's almost a drop in.The Eagle H-beam rods need a lot of 'touch up' in places,, again I am not comfortable 'touching up" but they work on a budget. Final thing to consider with the 400+ SBC,s ... you need a head that is capable of supporting that much motor. You start getting into some high dollar, one-off, super trick nightmares when you get up above 410" and 600HP,, trust me on that!!!!

if you want a dependable truck ,,and drive it every day,,350...parts are cheap,, and in every town that has 5 or more houses,, you can find parts...no waiting..I 've had one in my '63 carryall for over 20+ years now... was going to install a b/b but just cant because of convince...
