Slappin' More Paint On It!

I feel like I never get anything done on my truck so I have to post whenever I finish a stage of this "never-ending" painting project. Finished the inside of the box on my 50th Anniversary Big Block Longhorn. Now moving on to Phase 3 - Exterior BC/CC.

Yes the wood was painted from the factory so it is going back to stock!

Looks great Mike. When you get a chance can you send me the paint code? One day I plan on repainting my 50th and would like to have this on file. Thanks

Re: Slappin' More Paint On It!

Rob, It does not look nearly as nice as it does in the full resolution pics. The paint is PPG 23048 Anniversary Gold Poly. I always give them the GM code 551 as well. Dodge also used the exact same color and the exact same name for some vehicles. If they mess up and print the wrong name on the label and you don't check it at the counter it can really screw with your mind when you go to mix paint the following morning!!!!! DON'T ASK! There are three numbers that can be printed on the can and invoice but the important number here is 23048!

Re: Slappin' More Paint On It!

Hart_Rod, Another note on primer. GM used black primer under the gold and they sprayed the paint really thin. I used grey and it results in much more "pop" to the gold that most people like. If there were two trucks side by side in a truck show, somebody would be getting points deducted for not maintaining the authenticity of the restoration...LOL! You can definitely tell the difference. My Longhorn is a working truck so I don't really give a rip but it is noteworthy if you are trying to do a period correct restoration.

I really like the painted wood on the bed....that is how I will do it if I ever convert my truck back to wood bed .....

Re: Slappin' More Paint On It!

I have a quick question for you stllookn. I noticed that your tailgate is covered in bedliner. Do you plan on keeping that way? The reason that i ask is because my whole bed is covered in bedliner and one day i plan on removing it and painting my bed. How do you get the stuff off?

Re: Slappin' More Paint On It!

Hey...good eye! PO did that...and it WAS a PERFECT tailgate! I was going to leave it but decided to use another tailgate I have that is not coated. I decided to give this one to my friend whose shop I am using. He has a lined bed and it will match his. I really like the bare metal or wood on a restored truck. Mine will have a camper on it so it will NEVER see dirt or rock...I have a trailer for that. If I had a problem bed and a REAL working truck (you just blew my cover) I would line it.

I wish I knew how to remove it...I am thinking I would try a heat gun first. You might want to call Rhino Liner or one of those compaines to see what they have to say. Sorry I can't be of much help.

That looks awesome. I like your choice of the extra "pop" with the grey primer. It always amazes me how the color of primer affects the topcoat.

The truck is looking really good Mike. Once you get that camper shined up and on there you are going to have the coolest camping rig in Washington!
