Thinking about new rad
Think it's about time to ditch the 2-row rad for a bigger one. I have a shroud on now, but would I need a different one w/ a bigger rad? Thanks, all.

Re: Thinking about new rad
FWIW, I had my old 2 row radiator recored to 3 row And it cools just fine.
The 2 row cooled okay, but after 37 years it was getting weepy in places. I also replaced the factory "finger guard" with a shroud. I probably could have gotten an after market radiator cheaper, but I just wanted to keep my old Harrison tanks. I've been know to other weird things on occasion.

Re: Thinking about new rad
Thanks for the info El Jay. The old 2 row works fine most of the time, just not in summer. Sounds like 3 row is all I need.
If you dont mind me asking, how much was the recore? Thanks again. sb

Re: Thinking about new rad
this is one of the only things I ever got that was really good from Autozone (I work at NAPA...sorry). Go to Autozone and get them to look up the radiator for your truck with heavy duty towing and A/C. You can get a 3 core copper radiator for less than 200 bucks. I just straight up asked for a discount and got it. After working at a parts store you realize that any business can discount. Sometimes you just gotta ask for it.

When he owned it, we swapped out the 292, I-6, for the 355. The old 2 row worked "okay"; but like I said, it was getting "weepy". I could see where coolant was leaking & then the radiator was "sealing" itself up. Trouble was on the horizon! That's when I had it recored. Unfortunately, that was 3 years ago & I don't remember what it cost. LJ

Re: Thinking about new rad
Unless you know someone that will give you a deal on a recore job, it is cheaper in the long run to just get a new one. New usually includes warranty also.

Re: Thinking about new rad
Any type of machine work today is pricey. I live in southern Alabama and the closest recore guy charges about $200 minimum.

Re: Thinking about new rad
Why wouldn't you just order one of the universals from Summit? They have aluminum radiators for around 180, I think.

Re: Thinking about new rad
I agree summits are a good deal, but just be careful and remember that aluminum costs more to repair if it gets hit by a rock or something. Do the summits have the tranny coolers built in?

Re: Thinking about new rad
Would the universal alum one use the same mounts?
