Junk yard find or not

I have not been able to find a fuel tank for my truck that will go behind the rear wheel, the junk yards pull them or punch holes in them. I dont know if that is law here or something. Anyways, I visit the only u-pull-it yard here fairly frequently because they get alot of older trucks in. Well I did find anything today and was about ready to leave when I spotted this sitting in the crusher bin, it had an v6 motor banged into the side putting a small dent into it.




Anyways, I wanted to know if this is a find or a total bust. It measures 29"X21"X10.5" on the thickest part and it has 22 embossed in it so I suspect it is a 22 gallon tank. However I have no idea where it came from. It is a side fill tank which I want. The main question I have is, it will take quite a bit of cutting on the framerails to make it fit, will that be a problem strenght wise. The second thing I wonder about is the sending unit. I dont know much about fuel tanks could anyone chim in and let me know if this is chevy,ford,dodge etc. Any other advise or input would be greatly appreciated!!

36 views and not one opinion, I am dying here guys! I will try to post some pictures later to today with the tank up against the frame and see what it looks like. Any ideas on what that sending unit opening looks like and goes to? All the help would be greatly appreciated!

It looks to tall on the top part above the flange. My measured about 4-5" above the flange. The flange of the tank sits on the frame. I think yours is to narrow. Mine measured 31x31 flange edge to flange edge. I don't think triming the frame 1/2 or so really effects in to much. Maybe if your pulling a big trailer or carring heavy loads but I doubt it effects it much.

Thanks Dave! I went and measured mine and flange edge to flange edge is 33 3/4" X 23" So I am pretty sure it needs to hang underneath which I hope wont be too bad since it is only 10" tall, however it needs to go in between the rails far enough so that the filler neck clears the top of the frame rails.

I'm not sure but I don't think you can have anythink sticking above the rails. Maybe if your going to raise the bed of your truck? Look on my thread and see how mine sits. The first tank I had sat to high and it messed with the bed supports.

Went home during lunch and snapped some shots of the tank on and underneath the frame. I MUST be out of mind! that tank is huge although 22 gallons would be sweet!

In order for it to go all the way up above the frame I would need to almost cut completely through the flanges of the frame so that is a no go. I am looking at raising it into the frame maybe about 3-4" and having the fill neck through an opening in the frame. What do yall think?

An other option would be to section the tank in half and cut out the middle section but that is of course alot of work plus I would lose the benefit of the large tank. That kinda leads into another concern, is 22 gallons too much for that frame as it sits stock? will I need to reinforce it?

I would say find another...that is going to be way more work than it is worth....

Yeah that is what I am leaning towards as well, the problem is here they are impossible to find so that would mean I would have to buy a new one which is a mucha mulla for this build.

That things a monster. Looks like the first tank I tried it was a 33 gal. It fit but it was to high. Stodder found one but it had a hole in it. Why not just weld the hole shut. Around here every car/truck in the junk yard has a tank in it.

hahahah yeah it is a monster! didn't look that big at the yard, looked just perfect hahaha. I can't even find one with a hole in it, I have asked at the pull it yard but they wont "save" me one, they are scraped the same day come in, must be something environmental or something.

That makes perfect sense! but then I dont work as a lawmaker/tree hugger. I mean for crying out loud there are warning labels on the pump that gas has shown to cause cancer...."no thanks on the martini, I'll just have some 91 octane"

I think everything in Cal. causes cancer. I live in Idaho so I'm safe. Except for West Nile and Beaver fever. Oh and Brucellosis, Chronic wasting and Lyme disease.

Rough calculation that this is a ~28 gallon tank, meaning 180 lbs of weight, that shouldn't be too bad.

Is that leaded or unleaded? 5.93-6.42lbs per gal. I would'nt worry about it unless your towing somthing or if a corn fed sits on your tailgate.

Found the tank online, it's a ~1975-1985 Ford Econoline fuel tank, 22 gallons.......can't bring myself to put fjord part in my truck....guess it's going on CL.

Thanks Dave!! when I looked at the ad it is a in-the-cab tank. I shot him an email and see if he might have someting. I also found someone in victorville although that is a bit of drive.
