Looking for some 4 link idea's..

been throwing around ideas for a while about how to do bags in the rear for a cheapish , and so i don't have to cut out the bed.. or atleast most of it... it is a tuck after all...

so i've pretty much come up with putting truck arms in, or a parallel 4 link.. can't really find a good spot to put the bags though.. still have enough room for shocks, sway bar, panhard.. etc.. exhaust is a non factor though..

dunno.. just look for some ideas.. some picks if any one has a for link in their '73+..

thanks.

If your looking for "Cheapish" I don't see a four link being your answer. The best bang for your buck if you don't want to cut the bed out is an AOL system.

Its gonna be cheaper for you, if you go with a Triangulated 4 Link instead of a Parallel 4 Link w/ Panhard bar. Also, easiest place for bags would be over the axle, but that means you will need to cut into the bed if you want it to sit real low.

Re: Looking for some 4 link idea's..

The problem with a triangulated 4 link on that truck will be trying to located the upper bars off the axle tubes as it's not advised to weld to the top of a cast GM center section. You can run the triangulated 4 link off the axle tubes going forward but then you won't have much room to mount the bags off the top of the axle tubes. Plus an over axle system would require cutting the bed floor in order to allow the truck to drop down low. If you went over axle without cutting the bed floor than the truck wouldn't get down very low.
The other option is to run the bag off the lower side of the axle tubes with what some call an "under the bed floor" system. This will allow you to drop the mounts down lower, thus allowing the axle to travel up higher without modifying the bed floor. Typically you can located the airbags off the front, or rear, of the axle tubes. Keep in mind that what you're going to have for suspension, bag location, and shock location, as all those will need to fit inside the same area.
You could also go with the parallel 4 link as it's sometimes a little easier to install. There's no need to try and find, or install, a forward crossmember for the upper triangulated bars to locate off. The pan hard bar or watts link can then be used to position the axle under the truck and control the side movement.
Either way you're going to need a little fabrication to get either system to work, especially if you're looking for a cheap alternative 4 link. There are some bolt-on applications available for your truck however they will cost a little more then the weld-on type, however they would be considerably easier to install. Cost vs time is always on the discussion table and the builders mind.

Good luck with the project and keep us informed on what you end up doing.

Re: Looking for some 4 link idea's..

pardon my ignorance but what's a AOL system?

as for keeping it cheap... i can make/install everything myself.. so it should be a good deal cheaper.. and my time is free..

thanks for the input guys.

AOL = America OnLine ... j/k

AOL was the short version of Air Over Leaf. Something similar to the image and products shown below by Air Ride Technologies.

ahhh.. ok, I thought those were only for overloading your truck, never seen them being used to drop.. but it makes sense..

Re: Looking for some 4 link idea's..

The difference in the AOL system and an overload system is the size of the bag.

I have used both and can attest to their capability to do the job just fine.
