I have a body shop. Here is my 2 cents, Pick one system for example Acme, PPG, Dupont or whatever. stick with that system from start to finish[Primers color clear]. It always ALWAYS needs more sanding. Goodluck, be brave divein have fun. Afterall, thats why we do this in the first place isn't it? Jim

Anyone have a lifted pickup hugger orange or have a pic? I haven't seen one lifted with that color.

All the above advice is good.I will tell you one thing i have learned about paint "on anything" that is probably the most important thing.

This is the third time for me to paint one and I think I finally got the third one right. Lot of hard work and sanding time.

Here is my home painted '81, 2 stage urethane, complete with dust nibs in the hood. They don't show outside, but hey...........it's my truck..........so I never buffed it!

i been messing around with rustoleum. since I am on a low buck rebuild. i shot some fenders, hood and cowl with rustoleum about a year ago. came out pretty nice for rustoleum.

This is my old bosses friend David. step by step instructions. I've seen 5-10 trucks painted by him. They all look very good.

ya i heard the same thing. i want mine black, but im doing my own body and metal work, so im not sure if im gonna do the final body work and paint because they say everything shows up in black paint.

Well I have had a ton of black cars even my first car "1940 chrysler" I still have. I have done tuch ups on a few of the doors and one finder I also painted a visor for it. You cant tell at all I just used single stage black without any flake or anything else in it. Then color sanded it and buffed it out and there isnt anyone who can tell. I also repained the cowl on the jeep because of some rust from the window and you cant see that either. I also had a black honda I painted the front end on before I pained it yellow then years later silver with flames. Mybe I'm just lucky but here are the pictures you can look for yourself.

I read the article in Hot Rod mag about those guys painting w/ a roller and pan!!! It was a good article. I think they were trying to show that painting could be done by anyone if you do your prep work right. And, yea I know it's a lot of work. But I'm not unlike a lot of guys who just don't have that kind of green. All of your paint projects look real good to me. Thanks!

Everyone has heard "black is the hardest to do" As far as actual painting goes, it is the easiest because you can see whats going on. Also dark colors are much more forgiving when it comes to color match. Ever see a gold or silver car going down the street with a door or fender that don't match. I see it everyday and always think the same thing. (Which I've decided to keep to myself) However if your'e gonna paint your rig black you better have your
"sh!# in a pile" when doing the body work unless you like to be ridiculed by the masses!

Bugsy, nice tow truck.

I painted my c30 in a friend's garage. He knew what he was doing. I didn't. So he taught me some things. Enough to make me realize that had better stick to mechanical and electrical work. We got the truck painted in record time, but it took some grueling sanding and buffing. He was awesome with the welder (we avoided putty whenever possible), and he obviously knew how to spray. The blue was forgiving in the paint process, but less forgiving in the buff process. Whereas the white showed every speck of dirt (including a suicide moth on the roof that left a flaw that nobody can really see). There are a few minor clear coat mistakes that seem more apparent on the white for some reason.

If you want it to turn out nice and you want to do it yourself, I highly suggest finding someone who knows how to paint already, buy them some beer or give them money, and help them so that you can learn the ropes. If I were to do another car, I'd still want supervision. I think it's an acquired skill with practice. As said before, even with skilled folks, things do go wrong.

Here's my split personality truck...a tow truck in stake bed disguise. I also made and stained white the stake bed rails from lumber and many many stainless steel bolts.

Heres mine... Just have a pic of after wetsanding... Did it in my garage. ahaha... Some dirt in the clear, bu ti just finished wetsanding and it all looks like this pic, so im good to go.

I sprayed my 67 Camaro myself with PPG Base clear and it still cost over $1,000 in materials because I used red. It has been 15 years and it still looks new, great paint. For my truck, I will roll boat paint with a 4 inch foam roller and then color sand and buff. Saw it on the Mopar forum and in some magazines, except they used Rustoleum, which is not very good paint and a waste of time. I figure the boat paint is good enough for boats outside and in the salt water and it can be color sanded and buffed. It should last a long time. If not, I will roll on another coat whenever it needs it. Neighbors will love seeing me do this.

I'm really curious about this "roller painting". I know it's not the pro way to go, but ........? I think I'll find a panel of some kind and try it just to see what good it would do. I am thinking of maybe putting it on a "shop truck" .

Of course you aren't stupid! Funny you mention that...the bowtie in that picture is badly faded after spending years in the sun in CA (which is where the truck spent all of its life before I brought it to PA). I didn't realize how faded it was until I saw another one, so I promptly ordered a really nice one from eBay last month. I just installed it on Thursday. Much darker blue. I like it much better. Is that what you are referring to? How faded it is? They were all this size (and a rich blue in the center) with a chrome surround and a black inset highlight that year (1969).
