What to expect from xmember chop.

any good fab shop around here charges around $55 dollars an hour..

i would guestimate probably 15-20 hours in this mod..

but XXL will have a better answer as far as how many hours are in it

Well I just reread some of this. What are people using for a rack and pinion? I think that would probably be the best option if you knew what you were doing.

My stocks BARELY fit with my 3" spindles on...

Missed this Whole thread. I have done all of these 1.5" and no one has complained about major clearance issues they were all as XXL pictured.

Smashing when you raised your suspen 1.5 was that done by raising the ster box?

Captkaos have you ever moved the xmember up to center the wheel? What am I looking at to do that. My question to be specific is can the member be moved forward and the motor mounts back so the engine, tranny all stays in the same location?


More info- wheels will be 29 inches tall

hey captkaos, so even the 67-72 ones you did had no clearance issues? I want to do this mod when I get to bagging my 67 burb but really don't wanna move my steering up or doing anymore notching or cutting other than the 1.5" sectioning of the crossmember.

If you don't move the steering up you will get bad bump-steer.

XXL's setup is the one I made for him, the clearance I have ran into on mine have only been what he showed.

jmedero, anything is possible with a welder and some steel.. It can be moved, but you would need to take in account the bolt hole locations and how far you want it moved. If I wanted it done, I would probably make mounting strip with the new locations drilled in them.

I still make these on occasionally, the cost is $585 + a core. I would not be interesting in moving the location forwards though.

I raised the box and the idler arm up 1.5 inches, then clearanced the frame until nothing hit from lock to lock. After that i built a new lower flange out of 1/4" steel. It's looks just like a c-notch from the inside of the frame.

urs is how mine is i just went 2 inches with everything and 1 inch forward to center the wheels. the problem i ran into was the steering shaft. but the fix to that is u joints. i have 2 1/2" drop spindles and 22's. i still had to pie cut my upper arms and step my lower arms. but this is what it took for my truck to lay out.

seems like alot of work for 1-1.5 inches, does it really make that big of a diff?

It's the difference between laying frame and laying your control arms on the ground and making the truck have a backwards rake when laid out. I'd say it makes all the difference.

Even if you're not planning to lay out, it 's worth the effort. It allows that much more clearance @ a comparable ride height vs. not doing this type of mod.

I did my c.member exactly for this reason. I wanted more suspension & ground clearance but didn't wan't to have a higher ride height. Ultimately, I switched to a Dropmember for the additional clearance, improved geometry, & better track width.

It's the Law of Diminishing Returns. In this case, the lower you go, the more work it takes to get less and less drop.
