Looks clean... Can you give us an idea on cost and media used?

I'm planning on doing the bed on my 69 this year and probably the cab next year. I'm sure you don't have a rust problem in Utah like we do in other areas, but what did you use to protect the cab after the blasting?

It cost me $700 to have the inside and outside blasted, and primered. I'll have to get back to you on the media type (I think it was called green diamond...or something like that). He sprayed some R/M Epoxy Primer on it when it was done so it wouldn't start rusting on my way home I'm going to be taking the bed over, but I'm going to have him soda blast that. The nice part about the soda blast is that it does not generate the heat like sand and other more harsh media does, nor does it pit the metal. The downside to that is that it will not take any rust off. Lucky for me, my bed is in fairly decent shape.

700 I got the cab and all the bedparts priced to blast and prime for 250.00 maybe its just your area you livein but 700 seems rather high for just the cab but it does look good

I don't think you could get a fender done in this area for 250 I have seen a few posts on here for what people paid, and I've seen anywhere from 200 to 1000, so I feel pretty good about it. The other part of the price equation is that I trust this guy to do a good job, and good jobs aren't necessarily the cheapest.

$700 for just a bare cab seems a little high to me. I don't want to rock the boat here, but I am in the Chicago area where nothing is cheap, and I found a guy to soda blast the entire body for $1000. He said he would blast the frame and suspension for $500 and an extra $200 to powdercoat.

I've been told that I could have the bed done for around $300 here in my area but I haven't done any actual shop pricing though.

I guess it depends on the whether you are in an economically depressed area or not. If the shop needs the work, they may be willing to do it cheaper.

I would highly recommend you do a lot more research on soda blasting. It works well BUT it can have some major impact on your painting. Most paint companies will not warranty their paint if the part has been soda blasted. It ends up leaving a resude that is almost impossible to get 100% removed and will cause adhesion problems with the paint.

It has been talked about in depth on a number of paint/car boards.

Luckily I'm not in a boat

There were two things that cost me more on this one 1 I wanted it done inside and out, and I wanted it primered. We also upgraded the epoxy (well, according to the blaster) which was $200 in his cost, so again. I don't feel bad about that.

Thanks for the info! I will definitely do some more homework on it prior to having it done. I will be doing my own work, so I don't want to do anything that's going to cause me more heartburn. As it is, it's going to be tough

I would stay away from the Soda blasting, It will cause corrosion which is bad,

As far as price..I have had a few experieces with the 250.00 guys and the 700.00 guys, It is just like paint, if you go to Earl Schieb or Maaco, you get an Earl Schieb Paint Job....You always get what you pay for in life. If they are any good you will pay for it. JMOpinion

soda doesnt do a thing to rust and there are far ranging rot issues if not absolutly cleaned up in the crack a crevises //it rits metal like pouring battery acid on it
theres a reason why most paint manufacturers wont warrenty thier paint thats applied over a soda blasted finish

with a good blaster operator the heat warping is a nonissue far blown out of proportion as an old wives tale

where did you get yours blasted? i need to get mine done and thats alot cheaper than the quotes i got

I'm glad I posted this morning, there's been some good insight to soda blasting that is really turning me away from the soda blasting idea.

If you follow the directions correctly, use the epoxy primer as the manufacture of soda blasting equipment you won't have issues. If you don't use epoxy primer after soda blasting the paint will not stay. If not immediately obvious, a pressure hose at the car wash will peel it right off. A 68 grill I seen wasn't treated with epoxy primer done that. Re-blasted coated with epoxy primer, no more issues 2 years now.

true in most cases but not in all, these guys are there to make money not to rob people. I would not pay anyone 700 to blast a cab that is just robbery. they probably wouldnt use but one bag of sand if that

and yes the guy that is going to be painting mine said t be sure that no one soda blasted the body panels because of adhesion problems
