Best deal on truck/parts you missed!
Ok guys, I'm just sittin here stewing because I was a couple days late on a deal for a wrecked 71 short fleet. It had a great cab with new seals and glass, and included a new set of bucket seats, as well as the factory ac parts in place and the compressor to boot. 5 lug factory power discs. The fleet bed was in good condition and it had the firebird style marker lights in good shape to. Tilt colum. the gauge cluster with individual gauges insted of idiot lights...and so on and so on. Why was it such a good deal? Hows $300 sound? And come to find out, I could have bought the whole truck with a running 350/350 combo and a set of cragar wheels and tires for $800....To make me feel better I thought maybe you have a better / bad tale of missed opportunity....

Re: Best deal on truck/parts you missed!
Back in 98... $900 for mostly rust free 69 GTO...
Didn't buy it because it didn't have a title. And around 03 I found a rust free 69 Firebird for sale in SC for $1,800, no interior or drive train. REALLY wish I could have bought it... I had NO extra money at the time at all.

Re: Best deal on truck/parts you missed!
I have no cash and giant holes in my long beb. Found this on craigslist
I have a beautiful short bed for a 68-72 Chevy truck. I also have another short bed that will require minimal work and is much cheaper. Call (216) 267-1105 with interests. $2000 There are no dents, no rust holes and no rolls in the floor. http://cleveland.craigslist.org/pts/1307055465.html

Re: Best deal on truck/parts you missed!
Called on an ad on Craig's list, 1956 Chevy pickup, surface rust, all there but motor and trans. I like many of you I have heard the surface rust story before only to find a rust bucket. He also had some chrome parts for sale, I bought a new chrome front bumper and chrome grille for 200 bucks. I went out back to look at the pickup, it's a perfect untouched big back window truck, solid as a rock with a little surface rust. Completely stock with everything there, he sold it the night before for 600 bucks.

Re: Best deal on truck/parts you missed!
March of 2002. 1st baby arrived two months earlier. REALLY expensive bass boat on order. Neighbor I've been talking to about his 1970 3/4 ton 4x4 tells me he would sell it but he'd have to get $2000 for it. IT HAD 40,000 ORIGINAL MILES ON THE ODOMETER!
I decided being married with a new child and new bass boat was better than being divorced with a new bass boat and a 32 year old truck. I moved in 2003. Was back in the old neighborhood a few months later. Not only was the truck gone but the house and garage were dozed for a new place so I never did find out what happened to it.

Re: Best deal on truck/parts you missed!
Saw this in a local ad:
1968 GMC 3/4 ton Custom Camper. 1 Owner. 73,000 miles. $2200. I called about it and the guy told me "Yeah. I've had probably 50 calls on that already. It was a good old truck for me, but the first guy that looked at it drove it away." From the only picture it had with it, it looked spectacular.

Re: Best deal on truck/parts you missed!
Saw a '68 LWB on CL, 327, 3 on the tree, straight body, $1800. Called, asked about rust. Owner said yes there was rust. Let it go. Saw it again on CL. Called, asked if it was rusted through, nope just surface rust and it was sold. Dang.

Re: Best deal on truck/parts you missed!
I could have picked up an 85 K-10 with a 6" lift and a blown motor for $400. Had nice rally's and mud terrain tires (worth $400)!

Re: Best deal on truck/parts you missed!
I have a few...
buddy buckets on CL Columbus - seller wanted to sell the whole lot of crap (including the buddy buckets) - I didn't need the whole thing...Saw another member on here post them up for sale the next week on this forum...I know he got them for cheap since the ad said 'make offer' - just need this stuff gone... next one- 1972 rust free Blazer tub/chassis in OK (with plenty of pix of the normally rusty spots) - 2wd conversion started [5 lug front & rear]- no top, motor, trans...$500 obo. I called the guy to tell him that I would take it and that I could have somebody pick it up in the following week. He wondered how he was going to get paid and I told him - any way that he felt comfortable [money order, paypal, etc.]. He said he would call me the next day to discuss details - prick vanished and never returned any of my calls - car was marked sold online in a few days. I chased down a few blazers over a 9 month period - I got tired of people not wanting to sell to a guy in Ohio - when they lived out West...plenty of stories there, but I don't remember all the details. Sometimes I wonder if people really want to sell some of the stuff they have. |

Re: Best deal on truck/parts you missed!
Here's my stupid-me-story. The one that got away.
I know it's a "brand X," but in 1968, I passed on a yellow '57 T-bird Type F (supercharged), both tops (porthole model), Kelsey Hayes real wire wheels, Wonderbar radio, etc, etc. Loaded car. My rich-buddy's mother's car. Engine was seized - thought to have been a "sugared" gas tank - the price ?? here goes: $ 300. I even had the extra money & "coulda-shoulda-woulda" has been on my mind off & on for 40 years............... 'Course, at the time, it was just a used & abused 10-year old car, & $ 300 seemed like a lot for it. Now just one of those wire wheels would probably be worth double that. I know for a fact that the car got scrapped out, just because nobody wanted to rebuild the motor. Last edited by 68shortstep; 08-13-2009 at 09:44 AM. |

Re: Best deal on truck/parts you missed!
years and years ago when my Saginaw 3 speed blew it's reverse syncro, I was looking for options to replace it with.
I found and test drove a truck- a gold one hint hint- original 396, 4 speed auto, a/c ps pb, etc. the motor was dogged out(my 307 had much much more pep). There was the usual rust, but not too much. Everything on it was original though, nothing cut or pieced together, all stock. The owner said it needed a full drivetrain rebuild and some 'fancy new paint' , price was 1,ooo obo. Remember I was looking at it, mainly for it's transmission, any extras were, well extra. I decided that it would be opening a can of worms to buy it just for a 'good transmission' to swap into my truck. I knew very little about these trucks at the time, turns out it was a 50th anniversary, gold and white, and was probably a highly optioned 50th to boot! I remember the spid had all kinds of stuff on it, didn't know the significance at the time. The other was a 64 chevy truck that had been body dropped 6" with vette (90's) underpinnings. The body drop was somewhat crudely done with 1" tube, but could have been fixed up well. the guy wanted $400 for it. he wouldn't hold the truck, even if I paid him for it. (he needed it gone due to nasty new neighbors calling code enforcement). I borrowed a buddy's trailer after he got out of work, but the time I got back to the house, someone else had already hauled it away. I was really upset at the time, now it's just kinda funny.

since we are talking about brand X ...I missed a deal on 3 thats 3 (72-73 chargers) and one of those was a 400/4 speed with the pistol grip. all were fixable, but the three could have made one really good car. It seems when I think about it I've let $400 or $500 keep me from alot of stuff that in retrospect would have been very valuable....sheesh!

Re: Best deal on truck/parts you missed!
Summer 1977, bought a 1974 Dodge Charger (nice car, 318), then saw this ad the next day. "1970 Plymouth Superbird, 440 automatic, 22,000 miles, slight ding in the left front fender, $2200.00." Sheesh, paid $2150.00 for the Charger.

Re: Best deal on truck/parts you missed!
In 1991, when I bought my 67 Camaro, there were many other decent looking and running 1st gen Camaros in the Recycler for between $2,000 and $3,000. Also, Hemi Cudas were a lot cheaper back then. Wish I had bought them all up back then.

Re: Best deal on truck/parts you missed!
Here's a couple non-trucks that we missed out on. All of these stories were from 99'-05'
- 1970 LS6 Chevelle, Triple Black Car, Stripe Delete, Column Shift bench seat original, converted to Buckets and m22. $13,000 (1999) - 1970 396/375 L78 Nova, motor blew under warranty and replaced over the counter with 427/425 block, Red w/ Black bench 4 speed, black vinyl top $6,000 (2001) - 1971 Chevelle SS 350, all original, Copper Color w/ black stripes, buckets & console. It was either buy this one or get my car. $2200 (1999) - Found a 1970 Mach 1, Drag Pack (428/4 spd) Red with Black accents, all original sitting in a yard untouched since the 80's. Never could get ahold of the guy. Always checked in when we went junkyarding. This past March, the car was gone. I wasn't old enough to experience the $500 Chevelles, Camaros, and Cudas. These were just great deals right before prices went through the roof.

Re: Best deal on truck/parts you missed!
Just missed out on a 79 Chevy 4x4 for $2000.00 cause I didn't have the money. A total restoration was started on it but the owner died. The driveline was perfect, like a show truck, even had brand new tires. Everything was done but the body and that wasn't too bad.
