Pull tranny... or not to pull tranny... that is the question

So...
I already know I'm pulling the motor to replace it.
It is a 350 in a 72 c-10.
Now... do I pull the th350 tranny at the same time... or just disconnect the tranny and leave it in the truck?
I'm sooooooooooo on the fence about this.
I'm going to be doing this all in my driveway, and I'm trying to do the LEAST amount of work possible when it come to pulling and sticking this thing...
So... leaving it in the truck, I unbolt the torque converter and the bell housing yes? Kick down cable and... vacuum line??? yes???
Pulling the tranny means unhooking trans cooler lines, speedo cable, and... linkage... uhh... driveshaft and tranny mount... yes???

Yep. It's all a matter of what you want and need to accomplish. Ask yourself some questions:

Are there any leaks in the tranny? Now would be the time to fix them.

Are you detailing the firewall and engine compartment while the engine is out? If so, pulling the tranny will allow you to really make it look a lot nicer.

Do you have ANY DOUBT as to the condition of your tranny? If you do, pull it and have someone take a look at it.

And of course, now would be a good time to throw in a U-joint shattering SHIFT KIT that would rock your world!! HAHA

Leave the trans. in. Put a jack under the pan with a block of wood. Pull the engine forward to clear it & raise it on out. Piece of cake.

there is absolutly no reason to pull it. You are adding 2 feet of metal that you need to manuver by the windshield and heater box, added weight you don't need to mess with, all that trans fluid all over the place...
I've never understood why so many ppl want to pull it when they don't need to.

The transmission was pulled out about 2 years ago (truck has been dead a year) and was rebuilt. Trans is in great condition... or at least will be until the motor kills is... MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!... errr... uhhh... I mean... it'll last until I need something stronger MWAHAHAHAHA!!! *cough cough*... heh...

I agree with Longhorn man (as usual) If it doesn't need repairs there is no reason to pull it. And it does add a lot of weight and length to the otherwise easy to pull engine.

You can hook a chain from one frame rail to the other under the trans pan and put a block of wood on it to hold the trans up so that you can roll the truck around.

I swear... and I may have been drunk at the time... that I once saw a person that had their transmission held up by like... 5 bungie cords from one frame rail to the other... How much does a trans weigh... and how many bungies would it take? I have like... 40 of the darn things.

My gorge rises at it....." That said I'm jumping on the leave it in bandwagon, you can always drop it later if need be... unless you've removed the front rad support it's pretty steep coming in and out I'd rather go to a Shakespeare convention than to do it that way IMO.

I frequently use small racheting straps.... motorcycle straps if you know them by that term. Don't use the harbor freight or dime store junk though.

I just so happen to have 4 of those... Can't remember where I got them though since it's been so long ago... but I know where I didn't get them.

I was actually inspired by the Shakespearean title of the thread and felt that Tranny as opposed to Yorick would keep the thread on topic.

6 bell housing bolts three converter bolts few exhaust bolts and your done from the bottom definately leave the tranny

I went through the same thing with the truck I am currently building. I decided since the motor was out and the truck was pulled down and I really did not know the history of the tranny to have it rebuilt. Good thing I did too cause it was junk and the rebuilder could barely reuse even the case. Got it totally rebuilt with hardened parts and a shift kit and new torque converter for 571 bucks for a bench job. And once you get it back its easy to put both engine and tranny back in together with an engine hoist which you can rent if need be.
