Trouble when I punch it ...

Hey gang -

I just got my brakes all rebuilt and decided to go for a little spin in my new toy. It took me a little while to get her started, but when I did things seemed to be tooling along just fine. When I went to put it in gear and pull out of the garage ... stall. Repeat x 10.

I took the inline fuel filter out of the line from the fuel pump to the carb - and it was ridiculous. I went over to napa and got me a fresh filter. Popped it in and she fired right up and started to move. I was really feeling accomplished at this point. Until I got out on an abandoned stretch of road and punched the accelerator and it bogged down and almost stalled. I can add throttle slowly and it will pick up speed just fine, but if I try to pour it on too fast - no can do.

Any suggestions for a newbie like me? Am I going to have to learn how to rebuild a carburetor or does this sound like something you have heard of before?

here are a few places to start.....check your timing. and check yuor carb adjustment. how do your plugs look? is the gas new?

Did you check that filter again? May have lines that are rotting or a bunch of deposits in the tank that decided to break free. Also did you do anything with the booster? Maybie there is a vacume leak now?

A few more details about the truck may also help get you pointed in the right direction.
Did the truck set up for a long time?
Has the tank been cleaned?
Have you checked the "sock" on the fuel pick-up in the tank?
As stated above,are all vac lines hooked up or plugged?
Is the vacuum advance working or maybe leaking air thru a bad diaphram?
Just some initial thing to look over and think about.

I agree. More details. What kind of carb. Fuel pump? Stock or electric.
Sounds like fuel related issue.

It is a 350sb from 1980 that was placed in the GMC. The truck sat for a good 5 years prior to me purchasing it. There is no power brake booster, so I don't think there would be a vacuum leak associated wit that.

However - the tank has not been cleaned. There seemed to be about a 1/8 of a tank of fuel in the tank when I bought the truck and I put some SeaFoam in the tank as well as about 1/2 a tank of fresh gas.

The truck has a manual fuel pump that is working great - so I am guessing it is either a problem with the quality of the fuel or a carburation issue.

I am guessing that I should probably learn how to clean a gas tank.

Still wondering what kind of carb. Maybe quadrejet 4 barrel. Quadrejets had a filter inside the fuel inlet. Could be still there and plugged.
To fast of an opening on a secondary air valve on a quadrejet can cause a huge bog too. Let us know about the carb.

I am actually unsure of what kind of carb it is. I will take some pictures this afternoon when I get down to the garage and post them later.

Similar thing happened to me this weekend;

driving down the road when it just seems like I run out of gas. I knew I wasn't out but pulled in the gas station and put a few gallons in. Start up and start back home and the same thing happens. I tow it home but I can tell it just isn't getting fuel. I replaced th inline filter a couple of weeks ago. Do I start at the tank and work forward or change the pump? What is the easiest way to get to the sending unit/sock pick-up. This truck sat for several years and I just recently started driving again. It has run strong and the problem came on all of a sudden with no indication anything was going on.
