You should be able to look at the harmonic balancer and see if it's bad.

What kind of knock do you have?

Re: Can bad harmonic balancer cause...

Hard to describe... it was over a year ago.
It knocked above 1500rpm... while giving it gas. Would stop when I let off the gas and coasted.

What size is the stock harmonic balancer? There are like... 5 billion difference sizes, and even if I upgrade the internals of the balancer... I want to keep the same size so my timing guide marker thingy still works.

Re: Can bad harmonic balancer cause...

the ones i've seen that knocked were due to wear of the center hole and wear on the crank snout . it was common on early 80's V8 and v6 motors

If you can remove the one you have with the proper tool you can take it with you to compare... Check to see if you have a bolt on it for ease of installation. If you don't, I'd have a shop machine one in.

If you happened to get a balancer that's not lined up correctly, you can make a mark with a file or a metal hacksaw once you line it up with TDC.

Some rubber flaking of the balancer does not necessarily mean it's bad. There's always some that breaks or flakes off these old trucks. Also, there are places that rebuild these balancers.

Last, the knock you describe sounds more like a rod bearing or maybe piston slap but the balancer is a good start...
