Re: Smog Laws
what do you mean you have "10 months left" ?
just curious. as i understand it, in california all vehicles made after 1975 will require smog checks. but if your truck was built in 1975 or older, you're in the clear. there are some counties i've heard of in cali that have less strict smog laws, but i'm not sure which ones... i'm swapping my cab from my 74 doner to my 79 daily driver, just to get away from smog completely

Re: Smog Laws
Along with the strict CA laws, there are these mechanic shops that are just dishonest. This past month my dad took his car to get it smogged and they told him that it didn't pass. They suggested a tune up, which was already done before taking the car. Then they suggest a new cat, it was installed just two years ago when the last smog was performed! To make the story short they "replaced a vacum line", which the grand totaled to $250 bucks. These shops just have money on their mind, which is fine, but It would be more tolerable if they would earn it the honest way. California is a nice state, but it likes to take money out of pockets on just about anything.

Re: Smog Laws
This is why I bought my 73, and my 77 is on its way out the door. I had a smog guy but he got shut down.

Re: Smog Laws
That's why I saved my '73 also. We don't have smog laws here but...
They tried it here a number of years ago and couldn't seem to get it right. Local news crews were pulling new cars off the lots, 3 out of 5 would fail. |

Re: Smog Laws
there is 1 loop hole i know of and its kind of a PITA... there are 4 counties here in cali that dont require smog. there were 5 (i believe was humbolt) but that got stopped just recently. i'm sitting here trying to rack my brain on the names of the other 4...... very small counties..... i'll make a few calls and find out. just cant remember. but the hard part is getting proof of residence. p.o. box with reg/ drivers license/ and a few different bills in that county might work.

Re: Smog Laws
When I lived there in the late 80's there was a form that you could fill out that if you had passed smog with that vehicle before you could fill out this form that stated there were no changes in the vehicle. Many of my hot rod and muscle car driving friends used this form to get away with non-smog legal engine work on vehicles they had owned for a while.

Re: Smog Laws
You can always put the stock engine back in there for the smog check then put the new engine back in after you pass.
A weekends worth of work to do it but it works and you are not lying about where you live to do it. I knew quite a few people who did this with street driven race cars in CA. |

Re: Smog Laws
Really miss my '72. Smog sucks, but there is the diesel loophole. Pre- '99 is exempt...next truck will probably be a CUCV.

Re: Smog Laws
In Az you have to smog in the 2 biggest city areas. Its an enhanced dyno check. Not sure what years? Ca its 3 areas dependant on population. They are change of ownership for rural areas. 2 speed idle(no dyno) for lower population areas and enhanced check with dyno for largely populated areas. The state will direct you according to you zip code and model year. All states are different. Im a licensed advanced smog tech and there are ways to cheat but i wont mention them here for my jobs sake. I dont see the older models as a problem but the state does. We had a law that was 30 years and back no smog and our current governor changed it to 1975 and back. I have a 1975 truck and 71 chevelle so i lucked out. My 90 CRX has to be smogged.

We used to be 68 and newer had to pass but recently they went to 28 years old and older do not have to pass so all the 70's vehicles are coming out of the wood work and hitting the street again. Lots of squares back on the road now. |

Re: Smog Laws
I just bought my '79 and haven't transfered the title yet, but instead of that I plan on applying for a salvage title. I'm just going to tell them I have diesel engine, which would be smog exempt on my 9,000 GVW truck. Nobody is actually going to check what's under the hood.
I bought my last truck from Arizona and I was never able to get it registered, somebody removed all the smog stuff and I needed it back. |

Re: Smog Laws
There are quite a few pre-'76 shortbeds for sale out there. Purchase one, swap your drivetrain and any other parts. Then you don't have to worry about it ever again. That is if they don't change the laws again.
I was waiting for the "rolling" 30 year exemption on my '76 burb but of course they put the stop to that. That pretty much why I got rid of it.

Re: Smog Laws
Im going to build my rig to 05' specs and once Im done with the smog ref, I will tear into my build. Like a Cam swap, springs, retainers and maybe a throttle body.
Thats the plan, only way to get called back to the ref would be if I where to get caught street racing or pulled over by a CHP that wants to have a field day with my truck. Time will tell

Re: Smog Laws
Having a 73 or 74 cab is always a good thing for sure. The best part about that is if laws are ever changed in the future, the '75 cutoff is likely to be retained most places, since the MFGs were not required to provide emissions equipment before then.
