So here is the deal with this truck. I was on a convoy in IRAQ last yeay and when i got to my destination it was very late. Which ment it was mid day here at home. So i called my mother and talked to her for awhile. During this conversation she let the cat out of the bag and told me that she was giving me my uncles 67 GMC C-20. Lets just say that i was more than excited. When i got home it was a while before i got a chance to travel back home and see it with my own eyes. But i finnaly got the chance about three weeks ago. I instantly fell in love with this truck. So i started out by reserch. And that is how i found this web site. So i posted on the new guy list. Well i got married this weekend and my best man actually trailered this truck the 400 miles to my house for me. And here she is. All the plans that i have are seriously underfunded and overthought. I am not going to tear the truck down untill after hunting season. I was told the truck did not run but i put a battery in it drained the gas tank and put in frsh petro. And did a little carb adjustment and i have been crusing this truck around the neghiorhood. so i will putt around in it till the deer season goes out and she will start the teardown. My plan is to drop it 3 in in the front and 4 in the rear. change it to a 6 lug with disc brakes up front. and i am going to build a 383 for it. it already had the stock motor taken from it so why not a stroker? and the interior will be stock replacement. And then strip the trim but leave the badges. the color scheme will be a two tone forest green top with a flat white on the bottom. i will probably just use a gloss white and put a flatner in the clear coat. other than that no crazy chopping or spinner rims or anything. i will post pics as i take them and keep you all informed will work when i have the cash

Great news got some cash ordered some parts so within the next week me and the wife will start head first on this truck.. will post pics as soon as theres a change

My moms neighbor has the exact same truck, color and everything in origional garaged condition. I have always loved his truck and everytime I pass by my moms I gotta look in his yard to see if he`s outside so I can shoot the s*%t with him and ask about his truck. (like if he wants to sell it) its been there since I was 8 and Im 36 now and the truck still looks as nice as ever. keep the same color if you paint it.

i'd say just leave as a nice stock 8 lugger. you can get lowering springs for 3/4 tons and it would save having to do fab in the back to change to the wimpy 1/2 ton track bar, etc. also....it is easy to do a disc brake upgrade for an 8 lug using factory gm parts. my 72 burb is a 3/4 ton 2wd and it is awesome just as it came from the factory. if you do go with a 6 lug conversion, i'd be interested in those hub caps for my burb. anway....i like your truck.....she's a real beauty in the rough!

Parts started to come in last nite. Not sure how much i am going to go by my original plan though!!! I may keep it an 8 lug just because i dont see them enough. But im excited and so is the wife!! every time a box come to the house the wife thinks its hers!!!

and michael I honestly hate this color!! but due to the fact that the wife would never allow me to strip this truck to the frame and let it sit i am going to get the motor right first. Kind of a one piece at a time type of deal i hate to work that way cause i will get the motor and trans right then pull them to paint the frame but at least i can still tool around in the neighorhood this way.

If this is your first time to do a project like this I am glad to hear you are going to get it mechanically sound then fix just what needs fixing. The reason why I say this is because too many first timers get a project with great hopes, strip it down to nothing only to abandon the project for a variety of reasons.

cameo - it is and its not. I have tore a couple of motorcycles down to the frame and started over. Never a truck.. And i am not worried about abandoning it. I am more concerned that i would start going cheaper to get it done.

Congratulations on the score, and for having a wife that is so involved!! I'm doing a similar build, budget minded, getting it mechanically sound first (with the 383) and worry about the cosmetics later. At least this way you can enjoy the truck as you keep making it better and better!

runnin great.....drives smooth... heres the big decision time. I really want to slam this truck. I dont have the cash but i have the time so I figured i could at least flip the rear axel to the top of the springs. I see there are kits out there for the half tons but i do believe I am ok trying this one without a kit. this means the truck may sit untill i can do the front. Should i go ahead and just do it?

You can cut your front coil springs to get a cheap drop up front. Start with one coil. If that isn't enough cut another half coil.

If the trim is in good shape consider keeping it! It's super expensive and really sets the truck off when it is cleaned up and shines. Plus the holes have to be welded in. Check out the last 2 pages of my build and you will see what a difference it makes. Plus everyone else has done the shaved look, why not be different! The springs being cut will give you the look, but the ride will be bad. The heat weakens the springs and makes them bounce really bad. If you could cut them with a waterjet then it would be ok, but otherwise hold out for some drop springs on Craigslist!! I am assuming military convoy. Thank you for serving our country!!

actually cutting the front coils with a cut off wheel won't hurt it at all...just don't use a plasma or torch.

Ok so me and the wife got started last nite. Not really sure if she was ready to help but she changed out of her heels and threw on some jeans and did it anyway! i love that women. And thank you guys for the advice on the Front springs. I was originally planning on using a plasma torch. Now i think i ll just use a cutoff tool. But the rear first...Oh yeah no Power tools were used in the process of these pictures......ha

Frame is really solid still debating a c-notch kit though for this axle flip. I looks like once its flipped I will only have 3/4" travel before i hit frame and if I put a pad in it will basically ride on the frame.. Hmm decisions....

Two of my three material loves....The other is the one ton Powerstroke..Yeah its a Ford but i still like it..I got this roll pan reall cheap and i threw it up there just to see what it would look like.....I am definitly not sold on this ...I still may get a oem,, what does everyone else think?

Slick67- show quality... That trimm really does set it off but i am missing a few pieces from mine and I am also planning a two tone and the split would be above the trim not sure it would llok right but mabey ill do some drwings both ways and check it out.

You can always sell off the trim piece by piece to fund the project
