Hey Guys... my question is kind of directed at the guys in southern Califronia. Just put a brand new GM 350 crate motor in my 66 short bed, and would like to add a little icing to the cake by throwing a 700R4 behind it. I definatley want to have somebody put it in but want to find someone reputable. I talked to the guys over at bowtie overdrives some time ago but they seemed a little pricey. And maybe not so local, if some of you guys have bought elsewhere and been real happy with your purchase. Or just any advice you guys can give me going into this whole process would be much appreciated. THANKS!

I have heard bad things about bowtie overdrive but dont really know for sure since I have never dealt with them.

Gearstar transmissions! for 1495.00 you get a NICE 700r4, torque converter, 13 quarts of fluid, dipstick tube, trans mount, inspection cover, TV cable, and a bunch of other Misc stuff. Also it 1495.00 delivered! Just bought one. I'll post some pic's of the crating etc on my build thread. So far very happy with the service, they asked a lot of questions about my ride and the engine, rearend ratio and tire size so they could be sure to build the tranny right. Even asked me how I wanted it to shift.

I don't really know if this is going to help you. But if your looking to do it on a budget I found a guy out of Nuevo, CA who rebuilds them at a decent price. I bought a rebuilt 700r4 with a corevette servo, stage 1 torque converter, tv cable and everything for $540.00. The guys shop is a garage in the back of his house but the guy seemed legit. Yard cars all over the place, a real chevy guy. He does the installs also but I drove mine back home to San Diego. He gave me a 6 month no questions asked warrentee. I haven't installed the cooler yet so I haven"t been able to drive it yet. His name is Dave 951-858-1592.

For $540 I wonder what kind of parts he uses. It costs me that much just for parts when rebuilding my tranny and I use the good stuff. Unless he is selling you that without a torque converter.

There all borg warner parts. He showed me "all" the empty boxes. And he had about 4 rebuilt tranny's and a couple of motors sitting there. And yes it came with a rebuilt torque converter.

Well you already said you thought Bowtie Overdrives was a little pricey. But I have a stage 2 700R4 and am really happy with it. I did the install myself. Customer services is pretty good as I have called a few times about swapping over to TPI from a carbed SBC.
I did have a problem with their converter. I ballooned one behind a very mild 350. Have since swapped it over to an Edge converter, no problems so far. The TV made easy kit works well and you can get mild to firm shifts with it. Aside from the converter issue I've been pleased with the tranny and service.
