I traded my more door bel air for a '55 today. I'll probably be selling my '63 to make this '55 super nice. Or maybe not. Maybe I'll keep both.

I vote you sell the '63 to me. But I have no money, so it will have to be cheap. Which does not help build the '55. So better keep them both, just till I have more money.

I'd really love to keep them both. I'll put it this way, the '55 is what I've really always wanted for a keeper. My dad had a '57 back in '59 in Southern California. I've always wanted to do a kind of a trubute in the same vein as his. I could sell the '63 and do it quickly. Or I could keep the '63 and do it really slowly.

After making it a reliable driver (which the '55 pretty much is besides a couple of small issues- new battery cables and a tune up really), the first thing I like to do is lower it. The '55 is a lot more expensive to lower with the solid front axle. To do it right with a dropped axle and everything that goes along with that, it ends up being about a grand. I've got two girls and Christmas is coming up, I just won't have that kind of cash for a while. And I can only really drive one anyway.

The '55 needs doin'. But you need a vintage parts runner in order to do it right. What about after the build? You're gonna need a vintage tow vehicle to haul around that pristine, '55 - right?!

Besides, you don't want to rush a job like that. Have some patience and take your time, that way you can do a better job on the '55 and in the end, keep the '63.

There. that's my dollar 390's worth.

I tend to agree with you. Part of me says keeping both trucks would be awesome. Part of me says the funds from selling the '63 would give me a giant jump start on the '55.

Keep em both...if the 55 is drivable then u can drive one while you work on the other and vis versa...If you tear one apart you cant drive it and your down one vehicle. Thats just unacceptable. LOL

I think '55s are cooler trucks, but (all things being equal) your '63 is 100X better to drive. Cars & trucks come and go. Just do what you think'll make you happy that won't put you in too big a financial hole. It's your deal--you know what you want more than we do.

And yes, it is very bad ass. I first saw these pics when I was about 12 or 13 (I'm 37 now). I've wanted to do one like it ever since. I finally got the truck. The '55 will be in the same spirit as dad's. Low with dropped axle and leaf springs, steelies with drums, bias ply tires, sweet interior, and maybe some caddy hub caps. And this one is gonna be done 100% in house, no farming out of anything. I'm even gonna learn how to sew for the interior. It will be my masterpiece.

If you are going to have one old vehicle, you better go ahead and have two. I learned that after making a '55 Chevy (car) my daily driver. I ended up getting my '66 truck just to have as a spare. One of them will always break down or need some work, so you've got to have a ride to get to the parts store!

You'd be surprised about the driving part. Regardless of ride quality of solid axle vs. coils, drum vs. power discs, no power steering vs. easy turning, there's something you just can't put your finger on with the '55. The '55 is different but certainly not in a bad way. It turns out it's incredibly fun to drive, even with the ancient technology (or maybe because of it).

And I certainly don't have to sell the '63. But I can probably do everything I want to do besides paint on the '55 with the money (and get my wife some new carpet, lol). And I can do it sooner. Honestly, if the '55 was as cheap to lower as the '63, I wouldn't be selling anything. But it's gonna be more than a grand to get the '55 low with dropped axle and leafs. It would be twice that with a clip. That's really the most expensive part of the entire build. Everything else is nickles and dimes. I just want it low like yesterday, lol. I hate the 4x4 look.

Your experience may vary. The trucks like that '55 that I've driven were all fairly unenjoyable. On the other hand, I think the newer style are above average as far as the way they drive, ride, and handle.

I guess there is something kind of fun about driving things that are harder to drive sometimes, though.

I think it's great to have a collection if you can afford it, but I'm one of those guys that doesn't have that kind of money, and - can only focus on one project at a time, and that one gets all my effort. If you've thoroughly analyzed the potential sellers remorse, I'd say go for it and make the dream truck you've wanted since you were 12.

We've all missed something we sold, but I can truthfully say I've never wanted any of them back. Even my last daily driver 46 Ford sedan. We put over 300,000 miles on it in 8 years. We had a lot of adventures in it, and I miss the attention it brought, but I sold it to get my GMC and I've never been sorry. That's the nice part of this hobby, do whatever you want!
