Junkyard find...

I found this rearend at the junkyard and brought her home. It will be replacing the one I now have that has 6.17 gears. I am not that familiar with this new one. I got it because it has 4.56 gears and the width and lugs were the same. I didn't really know what brand it was until I got it home and started doing some research. It appears it is a Dana 70HD. Opinions, thoughts, concerns.......are welcomed.......Flat67

Re: Junkyard find...

That looks like it's out of a much newer truck than ours unless the PO added disk brakes to the rear. I would be concerned about how many modifications would have to be made in order for it to work in a 67-72 truck. Just my .02.

Re: Junkyard find...

Looks like a stout rear axle! it should be good for what you need if the width is right. I notice its a 10 lug axle..is it going in a C/40 truck?

Uncle Watts,

The rearend came out of a 1986 Big A## Motor Home. Im hoping that only the driveshaft/u-joint will have to be changed out. I don't know how the brakes will work out seeing how I'll end up with drum front and disc rear for now. But, I guess I'll soon find out........Flat67

Re: Junkyard find...

Does your truck have an I-beam type front axle? The newer 88-98 3500hd's have one and they are set up with 5 on the front and 10 on the rear. If I remember correctly they also run Dana 70 disc brake rears. Could be a good source for getting the parts to get your brakes working right.

Re: Junkyard find...

The rear disc conversion shouldnt be too difficult, mainly an adjustable proportioning valve. I would look into front discs from a 71-newer. 4 wheel discs! sweet!

Re: Junkyard find...

That Dana 70HD is a monster of a rear end, just about as bulletproof as you can get in a lightduty truck. I think if you can find front disc to fit having 4 wheel disc on your truck will be awesome, makes me want to build a ton!

Re: Junkyard find...

Our 69 D300 has a Dana 70 in it. 10.5" ring gear, 4.88 posi. Super stout rear. I pulled the axle out of one side to install a speedi-sleeve so that the wheel seals would quit leaking due to wear on housing...and the axles were huge. They dwarfed the dana 60 axles in my 'Cuda.
