New lower spindles, problems with upper ball joint fit
New lower spindles from reputable spindle manufacturer. Upper ball jointfit is not as tight as original spindles. The taper fit goes in and sits a little deeper than the original. When I spin the nut on it goes about a 1/16th of a inch past the codder key hole. Also the upper a arm touches the top of the spindle. The bottom hole seems alright and so does the tie rod end mount. Has anyone had this problem or should I be calling the manufacturer

I'd measure the taper on the ball joint first, then call the spindle manufacturer. They can tell you whether they blew it, or you have the wrong ball joint. I am betting 5 bucks on the latter.

The truck is a 72, I removed the old ball joints and ordered new ones for the same truck. The new ones are identical to the old ones. The spindles are 2.5 inch drop spindles specificaly for a 72. When I take the old ball joints and the new ball joints and compare them to the old and new spindles. Both the new and old ball joints sit down in the new spindles a 1/8th of an inch further than the original spindles. If I put two washers under the nut the codder key will work. About the spindles touching the a arms they don't. I have the truck up high on jack stands and the suspension was hanging down causing that. I just don't think you should have to use washers to space the nut out. Sorry for so long winded.

Do the ball joints fit the taper on the spindle properly(if set in the hole ,do they wiggle)?

I have seen several replacement ball joints that come with washers for just that reason. Seems cheesy to me but I have seen them installed too and never any problems. For what its worth thats my 2 cents.

No, the ball joint seems to fit the taper. It doesn't slop around in the taper just seems to sit lower. I will call man. tomorrow and get the scoop.

there should be at least a little interference tight fit, IE the balljoint studs into the spindles. hmm..

for what it's worth..sounds like the taper in the spindle was machined slightly oversize, the reason for the ball joint dropping lower. When I went to dropped spindles I upgraded to the '73-newer upper ball joint/tie rod setup. The new ball joints (upper/'73) were a tad to larger to seat flush in the a-arm holes. I had to grind some material out of the a-arm to get them flush. The manufacturer of the spindles said they had never heard of that problem! Liars!!

I agree with rustfree. It sounds as though you ended up with a '73-'87 spindle. What brand did you use. There are some companies that advertise their spindle to fit a '71-'72, then pressure you to buy ball joints. The spindle is really a '73-'87 and they sell you the new ball joints to cover their part and "forget" to tell you about the outer tie rod.

The spindles I bought from Classic Performance Products. CPP is clear in their description that the spindles are basically '73-newer. The kit includes new 73 upper ball joints and outer tie rod ends as these are different than 71-72 pieces. I knew this going in. What fried my a** was that the ball joint does not sit down flush in the upper a-arm hole, the hole had to be reamed out to get the b-joint to seat. I had read of this situation in a magazine a few years before but had forgotten until...
