Re: At Last- Power steering in a I-6
Well, I got in a hurry and forgot to check the flywheel size before bolting every thing together. Trying to beat the rainstorm. The manual 3 speed has a starter that bolts to the bell housing and uses a 168 tooth flywheel/clutch. The starter off a V-8 with a staggered bolt pattern also uses a 168 tooth flex plate. BUT when you change to the starter with the bolts straight across which is what is required on the Inline 6 and a TH 350-- now you need the 153 tooth flexplate. Oops .. Well ,this is a Pioneer #FRA 112 at the local parts house.
It took the 3rd counterman to able to help me. I hate hearing "sorry I do not know what to do now" when it does not have A/C and the year and model are not in the computer. Poor kid did not believe me that some chevy parts DO interchange regardless if the computer does not list them. Good parts countermen are disappearing. So the transmission comes back out when the rain stops. Better hurry cuz it is supposed to snow on Friday.

Truck Dr Dave did you have any luck with the power steering mount. Sometimes craigslist is a good source for parts, watch the projects list i have seen I-6's in there mostly cars 60-70's+ with ps ---Vernski

Re: At Last- Power steering in a I-6
Truck Dr. Dave--- The web sites are great help. I use NAPA, A-zone, Schucks Summit etc to check the part # then see what else this fits before I go the Pick-a-part junkyard.
It also saves time when you take the part number in to their store and they can't find it in the computer because the part you are after is not the same year as the vehicle it will be going in and it blows their mind.

My oldest daughter has now laid claim to this truck and wants it for her daily school car. Well .... I guess so.The bodywork and paint can wait. She and her all her friends think it is cool,(Must be the Twilight thing again) It is big enough for her to drive as she is 6'0" tall now, Heck I built it, I can put it back together after the crash.(teen drivers all crash sooner or later) She won't get more than two friends in it, AND no mischief in it cuz Everybody will know who it is! It will just increase in value over time. I'll get it back someday when she is ready for something else. She is buying new tires for it with profits from her FFA sale Dairy Heifer Glad I raised farm girls who like livestock and trucks!!

Re: At Last- Power steering in a I-6
Vernski, I've been working on my 68, cleaning it up, as it's been sitting for awhile, kinda thinking about selling it, so I have not really looked as of yet.
Thanks for all of the sources for the part. Bubba, first of all that is just one good lookin truck, that is the same color as my 68. Your Daughter is a lucky gal to get a truck like that, not many kids want the old stuff...my 16 year old son didn't give a hoot about them, until we were in the 68 and had to kinda get on it and the tires were smokin, now that's all he can talk about is that truck. I get most parts from AZone, most of the guys know me at the 2 locations close to my house, they use to always give me a hard time about producing part #s, always wanting to double check, I'd tell them that it's not a direct listing for that app, then they would get totally confused, now they just take the shopping list of part #s and fill it without saying anything. Another good site for sourcing and cross referencing parts is www.rockauto.com I just love being able to do it all from my desk and not have to deal with some nitwit that has no idea of what he or she is selling, it might as well be Ipod skins or ring tones.......if it looks sik or sounds rad then sell it to em.....lol Dave

Great looking truck. My wife saw this and mentioned to take her out pass the driveway and let her change a tire.
Makes her respect the rubber and makes all dad's feel safe.

Daughter has been helping out this summer. I snuck a picture of her grinding out the rivets on the old ball joints when she was not looking.

Darn weather forecasters! It is snowing big time and wind is howling. Must be time to go hunt elk. The late bull season starts Nov 1st. I am wondering about my sanity as I pack up.

Re: At Last- Power steering in a I-6
OK -I am back from chasing the Elk around the hills.
Transmission came back out,the 168 tooth plate came off, The new 153 tooth flex plate is now on, the new starter is place and shimmed to proper clearance from the flexplate. transmission is back installed. The transmission cooler should go on tomorrow. Shift linkage can start being fabricated.

Re: At Last- Power steering in a I-6
Saw more wolves than Elk. It is more of a yearly camp trip than hunting. All the guys are parents of FFA and 4-H kids. We get to camp together also at the livestock shows and State Fair. Hunting is a great time to just un-wind with no livestock to take care of!

Re: At Last- Power steering in a I-6
It is 45 miles round trip to the Driveline shop. This I know cuz I have made 4 trips now.
First I dropped it off and gave them measurements the length of shaft after shortened. Second took them the Yoke and new U-joints so they could balance it properly. Third went to pick it up and they had welded in new tube and balanced it but it was 11" too long. They mis-read their measurements on the build sheet! What should have needed only a couple of inches to come out, they built me one a foot too long! Forth time was a charm Got a shiny new driveline and an apology everybody makes mistakes. . . . . Make a difference this holiday season - Help out or donate your time- Somebody really needs your help -We have enough jerks in the world and it is time for the good people to stand up and take over.

Re: At Last- Power steering in a I-6
Need to get caught up here As winter is nearing a close here in Idaho.
Cut the rear bumper off today as my daughter is opposed to it on general principles. She claims it is sexist. I saw a posted picture a truck which had a cut down 70's front bumper which was installed like a rear roll pan. looked different but sharp. Back to the pick-a part yard. A new gas tank is next, I like the tank Lakeroadster put in his truck from a 50 chevy passenger car. just need to order it. Quote:
