Question frame cutting

I have a 1967 c10 lwb, I want to cut the frame down to swb and have been looking around and have seen it done two ways. The first was to cut 12 inches out of the frame right behind the cab, this way you have to remove the rear end and all suspenion components and then try to get it all put back in. The second way was to cut the 12 inches out of the frame under the cab, then just slide the frame back together and weld. I have all the measurments to do it the first way but cant find any real info on where to cut under the cab. Does any one have info?

Re: frame cutting

I cut mine right behind the cab, 12" square cut. It will be boxed for about 8" on wither side of the splice. Once you get to looking at it closer, you will be able to use the hole for the bed mounts to get it lined back up. Extremely easy to do if your not scared to do some cutting and welding. I have done alot of trucks cut like this, even an '86 crewcab 2wd that I made into a crewcab shortbed 4x4. I cut the frame in front of the cab and the rear. Just make sure you brace up the splice areas. I rockcrawl my toys and use them to hunt with also, so they take a beating. Alot of people will say you have to do some crazy angled cuts and diamond shaped splice plates, but that isnt really needed, unless you arent confident in your welding skills. Here is a pic of my '72 longbed diesel that I cut into a short stepper.
