hey guys just one quick question i loned my truck out to a freind and the power steering pressure hose started leaking. he is not a mechanic by any means so i told him not to touch it. my question is is it common for our truck to have both ends female or one female end and one male end? reason i ask is the truck is about a hour away and the local parts store has one hose in stock and the other is back order for a few days and he needs the truck up and running. i just dont want to get the hose in stock make a long tip out there and it not be correct

also my truck is a 1970 c-10 orig v8 truck.

My 69 has both ends male. With the power steering gear box side being slightly larger. I was told that the one with male n female ends was 4WD but can't confirm that.

What size v8? 327/350 ? Reason I ask is that we have a 67 matched up with a later model 350sb. Ours required a female to the pump originally and male to the box. When we replaced the pump with a new one, it came with a female fitting in the back. We had to reuse the original pressure fitting to make ours work. Lots of research on this one til we got it all matched up correctly. Not trying to intimidate, just educate. On a stock setup I would bet on male to male. Have your friend check the back of the pump and identify what the fitting receives. Always male at the box that I've ever seen, don't think they came any other way.
Good luck with it. Worst case scenario, still got your "guns" to steer with, just might want to disconnect the belt to the pump so you don't burn it up til you can get it figured out.

take it to a hydraulic shop they can put a new rubber pressure line on it and u can still use your hard lines.. i couldnt find one to fit my truck and it was like only 25 bucks

i called him up and he said he went under the truck and the line has male ends on both ends. i looked at napa, autozone and advanced and they only have either both ends female or one male one female. so does this mean i have to get one made?

also if i take the belt off it wont ruin anything if i was to drive it back home would it?

It won't hurt anything. It will just be quite a bit harder to steer obviously.

just take the old one to a shop and have it rebuilt. It will be cheaper and better than one from a parts store.

Pull the belt off and drive home. The only problem you will have is when you are in parking lots. In that case, only try to turn your wheels when you are rolling. Lack of p/s is not the end of the world.

im not worried about not having the ps. i own a 57 chevy car with a stick shift and no ps. i just dont want to ruin the pump that is all

i had a 90 f-250 diesel that had a cracked line and i just dumped in fluid whenever it went dry and a few times i ran her bone dry.. dropped fluid in and it still worked perfectly

if you disonnect the belt, the pump wont be operating at all therefore can't be damaged. Its like turning off a switch because the pump requires the drive belt for its source of power to build pressure in the pump. No belt=no power. Like the previous guy said, just hard to steer when sitting. Roll a bit in either direction before steering. Also, no PS will make you regularly check your pressure in the tires. Better, more accurate pressure makes for easier steering.
BTW, I had to have mine remade after we dug into the problems too. Might be a market out there for these lines. Just find any hydraulic shop or a good mechanic and take the old one to have it remade. Costs anywhere from 25-50 bucks depending on the place.

I would remove the belt but leave the hose in place for the drive. a lack of fluid will ruin the control valve in the box.
when I swapped my truck to PS I sed the hose from the donor 79 G20 van. some bending of the metal pipe and it was good to go. been that way for 6 years now.
