1 ton springs? need ideas

i have a 1/2 ton 2wd long bed and i want to run 31" bfg all terrains on it. what kind of lift would 1 ton or big block springs in the front give me? i want to do a small lift as cheap as possible so ill just be putting blocks in the rear. anyone have any other ideas on how i could get the front up 3 or so inches? thanks

Re: 1 ton springs? need ideas

on my dually I have 31" tires on the front and they fit perfect. if you dont go wider than 9.50's they should fit just fine.

A better option though would be a spacer on the spring, because a 1 ton spring is going to ride way rougher, and you need to have your springs balanced from front to back, so if you put 1 tons in the front, you will want them in the back. Otherwise it will make your truck unstable.

Re: 1 ton springs? need ideas

It isnt a bad job, but it is also not an ametur job, springs are dangerous, if you havent done em before get some one to help you, even when your suspension is at full jounce (down all the way) there is still load on the spring, and you pop that A-arm loose with out being supported properly, and that spring can unload, fly out and kill you.

they dont look like they'd be hard, i'd say get all the tension out of the springs then put them in.

Re: 1 ton springs? need ideas

You can use a rental spring compressor from O'rielly's or a place like that. Just be very, very careful when compressing the springs. If you have the compressors cocked, the spring will fly out and hit you or something. Just be patient and take your time while doing it.

Re: 1 ton springs? need ideas

My old truck had 31s on it, didn't look stuffed at all. I didn't want to put them at first because of that, then after they were on, wanted to keep it and maybe put some 32s on back and 31s on front. Sold instead.

No, you dont need a ball joint spacer, what the spring spacer does is it lifts the truck slightly by closing the space that the spring occupies, thus the same weight is displaced upward the ammount that the spacer occupies.

Also, you might consider a 4x4 conversion, parts to do it are easy to find, expecially if you stick with a half ton.

Just thinking out loud;

Would a 3/4t spindle provide a lift?

o sorry i didnt see that link. they only give me an inch of lift though.. i want like 3 inches. or is that just not gonna happen for cheap? if i could measure one of those spacers out i could make them 2 or 3 inches thick out of aluminum or steel but would that screw something up? bear with me if some of what i say is a little dumb.. im new to suspension stuff

i could get those easily. there are about ten good yards within 20 minits of me that have a ton of these trucks laying around. how much lift would a 3/4 ton burban spring give me? and would everything bolt right up?

Yeah 3/4 ton suburban with 454 would be your best bet and work perfect. And probably 2" or so

To achieve what you want to with a spacer is really not going to happen. you would also have to have a spacer on your lower A-arm, and custom upper A-arm to make it all work, you are talking about major rebuilding of yoru suspension.

Now consider this, you can mount ALL of the suspension brackets on to your frame for a 4x4 conversion with out removing any of your 2wd components!

The big job will be pulling the engine cross member, and installing the 4x4 one. Your truck would be down for about a week, maybe 2, less if you have good help.

If you play your cards right I am sure you can get a 4x4 front suspension for a half ton with the frame, of not the whole truck attached to it for little to nothing.

You dont have to install the t-case, you dont have to have a front shaft in to drive it, you can do that later.

I think for your application and in your neck of the woods, having a 4x4 would make your life so much easier, and the work to do it would be easier than lifting your truck as a 2wd.

And so you know where I am coming from, I have been wrenching on old chevys for about 16 years now, I also have a welding degree, and I am going to school to be a CNC machinist.

Good luck with your build, you should really get a thread going, you will enjoy it. - nick
