I was wondering if anyone new of a thread of how to make your own led tail lights? I looked on google couldnt really find anything but maybe wasnt typing stuff in right. any help would be great thanks

Was thinking the same thing and found the lights below at Trucklite was thinking that if I cut the lens of these I could then trim the metal on the back of my taillights and mount these. Just a thought for now. Here is the link to there sight

When I was at Hershey a man was selling the LED light bulbs that were real bright. I have not found where to buy them. Replacing only the bulb you wouldn't have to replace the lens. Anyone know where I can buy the bulbs?

yeah i even changed all the ones in my dash to led bulbs sooooo bright my blinker blinds me hahah not literally but whats cool is my truck is ochre and the glow the same color

I just finished doing my entire truck in LED's(sidemarkers/dash lights/tails/turns/etc), and after debating, experimenting, and struggling to do LED's in the rear tails, and have it look really good, I gave up the goose. It just isn't a big enough area inside the housing to recess the led's back and try to get good light dispersion. Save yourself the headache, spray the inside of the housing with a chrome paint and pickup a pair of the red 1157's here:

I have done 2 full LED tailight conversions on my last 2 cars with full blown rectifier networks, resistors, etc and just couldn't bring myself to do it here. The above lights have perfect running light brightness, in your face brake light brightness, are very diffused in the housing, and best of all, require zero modification to install...highly recommended, and another reminder that I need to get some pics taken!!

Installed and hot!- the camera made them look funny but they were truly filled and even across the lense - worked for 3 years flawlessly before I sold the car...

wow $18 for 1 bulb damn but cheaper then new lights i know so u spray the inside with chrome paint then use those huh?

Well, I spent over $200 in parts to do those large lenses on my old Subaru, and was estimating $50/side to do the truck, so $18 for a bulb seems reasonable to me for LED tails... Ya I just sanded them down and sprayed the inside chrome so it would reflect better than the aluminum housing and it looks pretty darn good...

My truck is in Storage so I'll take some pics on Saturday I'll take some of my toy tonight but will still shoot the 69 to see how the light fills the lens.

wonder how those would work with the chrome back like the other guy says that seems to be a good idea.

Those delcity LED's are very directional and have zero light output on the sides, unlike a normal bulb. Painting the interior of the housing chrome wouldn't be beneficial with those LED's since you are probably only getting a 90 degree light pattern, pointing directly rearward; therefore no light reflection in the housing is needed. Not to discount fixit-p or his choices, but that style of LED bulb is very "2001", and if you aren't up on LED technologies then you would think that to be a cutting edge model at a good price. However the opposite is quite true, LED technology has come a very long way over the past 10 years, and the high flux wide angle LED's used on the bulb I have referrenced are light years ahead of the standard bell style LED's used in that model in both light output and quality. In addition to that, the bulb I ref'd above has LED's on the sides as well as the front, so output is nearly 360 degrees, similar or better than a standard 1157 bulb...zero compromise from an 1157 filament bulb, with all the benefits of LED...


If you look closely at the above picture, see the little dots on each LED?, each one of those dots emits light and is quite intense. Each one of those dots is brighter than a single bell shaped LED. Say the typical 3mm red LED puts out 4 lumens(that's beyond generous it's truly more like 2 or 2.5) at say 120degrees x 12 emitters on the bulb = approx 48lumens of output. The bulbs I spec'd put out 80 lumens with 18 LED's containing 3 emitters in each LED, approaching nearly a 360 degree light output. I know I sound like a salesman for superbightleds.com but I'm not, just concerned about the safety of all, especially those that are led to believe by marketing gurus that these inferior LED's bulbs going in their tails are the cat's meow. Remember that these are the only thing letting the guy behind you know that you are stopping and they need to be bright, even in sunlight...and we don't need any more crunched classic trucks!

Those side markers look good man. were they hard to make??

Seraph, not at all. They won't work with the stock ones(light doesn't shine through), so I found some sidemarkers from Classic Industries for $9 each that have a opaque plastic they are created with, glue or epoxy some led strips(again found on superbrightleds) at an angle so they glow through rather than show the LED light points, put hot glue on the exposed contacts of the pcd/leds/resistors/diodes so they won't corrode and call them done. Then vampire clip onto the front and rear marker/running light wires and they will work perfect. I have some free time tonight, finally, so I will get pics posted of it all complete...
