Suspension removal?

First project fixing to get a drop. Just wondering the best way to take the old off without springs flying?

Re: Suspension removal?

couple of different methods. wrap a heavy, hardened chain around the spring and through a solid place. place a jack under the lower arm and loosen the lower ball joint nut about 1/2" then pop the joint. keeping pressure on the jack, remove the nut and carefully lower the jack, standing aside.

second method would be the similar, except place the jack directly below the spring and put pressure on it, then remove the shaft u-bolts and carefully lower the jack.

I've done both with success. You can also rent a quality coil spring compressor and compress the spring in place and remove. It's a pain to me and just as dangerous in my opinion.

Re: Suspension removal?

Thanks probably won't be able to use the compressor though. PO heated springs so much they're already almost completely smashed.

Re: Suspension removal?

If they are compressed already you can jack up the lower control arm with the rest of the truck already supported. Unbolt the lower ball joint and slowly lower the jack. You will probably have to pry the lower arm down the remainder of the way to get the spring out.
