67-72 on 88-98 frame?

hi.we were toossing around the idea of putting our 2wd swb 67 on a 91 4x4 swb frame.more or less a body swap.has any one ever done this?or seen one? is it doable?we saw one a few years ago on a '77 frame but we have a 91 parts truck we just got and was just tossing the idea around.the 67 was built to be a driver,good and solid,not a show truck so i wouldnt be rippin apart somthin perfect.what do ya think?thanks.

do it. nothing that a torch and welder cant fix. im putting a 69 on a 01 yukon xl frame. at least your frame is already a swb

I'm planning on putting a 66 on a 73-92 suburban 4x4 frame. I've heard the suburban frames are easier to use because the frame doesn't kick up under the bed.

I have ben thing about this to cause i bought a 93 extended cab shortbox and i am restoring a 69 long box and thinkin about doing the same i know it would require moving the frame brackets and maybe shorting the frame i need to do some measuring !

You need to make all new mounts and you have to raise the bed floor 4 inches or do a high body lift in the front. kind of a pain. seen it done on a truck in ohio. It could have been done alot better but it will work. Remember these new truck have a Much taller frame than the old ones. these 67-72 are easy to convert to 4x4 on the factory frame just need to swap the perches and crossmembers,trans/case all holes are present. grinder punch hammer, bolts zoom zoom ! I have done 2 takes about 1 day.

The frame is also wider by like 4" or so. I have seen it done on a 72 Crew Cab, but it would be a lot more work, then to say take a 2wd frame and convert it, or utilize a 73-87 4x4 frame. Converting a 2wd frame would probably be the easiest, the 73-87, you would have to fab up new mounts like everyone is saying and cut the frame as the the wheelbases are different. The 88+ frame would require heavily modified cab mounts probably inverted on the frame, the frame kicks up like others say quite a bit, and you would have to cut the frame. Trevor

ok so what year of axels did you use to convert to 4x4 from a 2wd frame on a 67-72 ?
do you have any pictures ?
could i use axels and lefs and brackets from 73-87 ?
do you have any sugestions on howto do it ?

Can it be done yes,Is it a huge job o yeah.Unless you can trust your life on your welds and have the fab skills to make half the truck i would pass on the idea.The wheel base changes almost every body style which is something you'd have to deal with.

I like 67-72s and I like 88-98s. I like them separately. I think they are GM's best designed modern trucks for the time they were built. The square bodies offered a more modern look (and more plastic and cardboard) on basically the same chassis/drivetrain. The '99-ups are basically the same thing, new style w/added unnecessary features on basically the same design. The 88-98s are classics now and cool in their own right. If I wanted a modern riding 4wd I would find myself a nice 88-98, drive it, and enjoy all it's other modern features and comfort with no elbow grease or added expense required (to leave more money to put into my '67 or '72). I know this is just me, and am fine with people doing what pleases them (ain't hurtin' me), but my take on this is why ruin two cool trucks to make one halfassed modern truck? It's not like these are not roadworthy on today's roads. It's not the same as the first hot rods that took antiquated cars from the teens into the '30s and updated with mid-century far more modern drivetrains to make them roadworthy. That only bothered purists. I'm not a purist, but I understand where they are coming from. Th fact is, there are plenty of both old school hot rods and original restored Model As out there 50-60 years later. Many that cars that are hot rods would have become scrap if not for the hot rod movement. Some old hot rods have gone into providing original bodies/frames for some of today's original restorations.
