Gear Shift lever
Is this the gear shift lever for an automatic or standard (both on the column... of course)?
I ask, because I have an automatic, and this shift lever has always seemed... sloppy. Toad

Well... then believe me when I say we all learned something new here today.
We've all learned that a standard gear shift lever CAN be used on auto column. But also believe me when I say that they don't work well. I think the auto lever must be thicker or something, because the standard shifter is really loose in the column.

My auto shifter was sloppy as well - there is supposed to be a rubber grommet on the business end of the shift lever - I replaced mine and it tightened up the feel signifigantly.

Well... the only way for me to shift into either 2 (or 1) is to put it in park, and then QUICKLY slam it down into 1. I can't just slide if from D into 2. It won't move.

i ordered that same shifter handle from LMC for my 71 auto non tilt column, but where do i get the rubber gromet???? my shifter is wicked sloppy as well and LMC doesnt have the pin that goes through the hole where can i find that the one from the tilt column is a different size i think wont fit in the column side of the hole?

my auto lever looks different on the end , wish i could take pic. but , mine goes on a tilt don't know if there's a difference with non-tilt .

I beg to differ with everyone but what you have is a automatic shifter, here ar a couple I have, both off automatics, the one on the top has a bushing on it so there isn't any slop. I've got probably 10 shifters out there out of auto's and all are the same as these, I know for sure I haven't had a 3 speed truck around here for years.

Oh, and the slop I'm talking about is that the lever is x millimeters wide, and the hole in the column that it goes into is y millimeters wide, which is z millimeters wider than x...
I'd say, 2 to 3 millimeters wider. So that in D, I can move the end of the shifter about 4 inches before it goes into N, and I have to tap, tap, tap it into N, because it doesn't "click" into N like it should.

That cotter key is the exact diameter of the holes in the shifter / column that it goes though. In fact, I had to hammer it in a bit.
It's not that hole I'm talking about... Tell y'all what... here in a bit I'll take a picture of the loose spot and post it.

I would guess you will have to get a different shift collar to correct that. If you knew a good welder he could probably build up the lever and you could grind it down so it fit tight. That would do for a temporary repair anyway.

The non tilt automatic shift lever and 3 speed column shift lever are the same. Most of the slop that you guys are getting is because the nylon bushing is either warn out or missing completely. We have three of these bushings in stock. $4.95 plus shipping.
Todtheodd, you have a couple of problems going on with your column. One is the carter key that you are using for a shift lever pin and the other is a warn out collar that has been wallered out from age. The nylon bushing is probably shot also. WES

Wes is correct on this, also the width of the shifter is different 67-70 and 71/72 as well as the collars it fits into
