Re: What do I do ?

Thank you all for the tips and advice. In the past I've had few of these adventures and they all worked out well. In 1996 me and my brother drove his 1969 Dodge Coronet Super Bee 383 ,4 speed car 1500 miles from Saskatchewan to the the Mopar Nats in Indianapolis and sold it there. The plan was to drive the car there , sell it, then fly home. When we were packing to go I asked my brother if we were bringing a tool box and he said no cause he didnt want to pay the airlines the extra money to bring it home. With that being said he had had the car for about 15 years at that time and it was daily driven in the summer and well maintained. We had no problems on the trip and did sell the car .

Some of your comments got me thinking though.

!. Unlike the vehicles of today, these trucks/Burbs are not designed for sustained 70-75 MPH driving.

2. Trailing a Burb 1800 miles is its own adventure.

3. If I did take tools I surely wouldn't have the one I need for the breakdown.

Anyway I've attached all the pics I have so far. Talking to the seller the spid label is there but she is not sure how to use a digital camera and someone else took the pics. I asked if the A/C unit was a rectangular thing hanging under the dash or were tere vents in the dash and she said the vents were in the dash. If any one wants to tell me what they think it is worth I'd like to hear it.

Re: What do I do ?

You could always ship a set of specialty tools (keep shipping cost as low as possible) there to someplace that'll hold the package until you get there, then if you decide to get the ride, pick up a lesser expensive set, of the mopre common ones you think you'll need for the trip home.
If you don't buy the ride, then ship the specialty tools back home.

The truck looks to be in great shape.
If it were me, based on what I see in the pics, I would take some time to thoroughly check over and pm it with a mechanic and cover all the major systems, brakes, cooling, fuel, basic electrical, (for lights and ignition), put some decent tread on it, and hit the road.
What ya got to lose?

Re: What do I do ?

The last time we shipped a truck it cost us $700 to ship a truck a little less than 1500 miles with a professional shipping company. Thats what I would do but If you have the time go see in person. If you want it, get it in a shop to have it checked out and drive it back home if it has a good license plate etc. I won't buy anything without seeing it in person. Or a competant person doing it for you. Forget appraisers. I don't trust them a bit. We have seen too many customers burnt and had to give them the bad news. I woould rather lose air fair than get burnt. It looks good in the photos but I would still go see it.
Just my 2 cents worth

Re: What do I do ?

I say ship it. I shipped my truck from Alabama to cali for ~$800. I also just shiped it from St' Louis to Kansas City for $350. You can go online and get multiple quotes and then call the companies and play one off the other. Times are hard. Someone will pick it up on one of their legs to make a few extra bucks. If it runs, you can get it shipped cheaper than a fly and drive or go and tow option. That's my .02

Re: What do I do ?

That truck is plenty clean..fly in..go to Sears and buy a 200 piece socket kit that will include every tool you may need and grab a cheap voltmeter. Then drive it home, adventures are always fun! I've driven many long trips in vehicles much worse looking than that , some of them even needed to be started by tripping the starter solenoid via popping the hood just to get going

Re: What do I do ?

DRIVE IT! You are allowed 2 bags of 50lbs EACH plus carry-on. Thats PLENTY of tools/clothes to drive it home. I'd have it checked/fluids changed before leaving. I'd have a spare waterpump, alternator, fuelpump, some hoses, silicone, extra oil, cascan, multiple vicegrips, & a pile of misc. tools. DRIVE IT!

I would fly out there, go over really good, buy it and have it shipped and my butt jump back on a plane and wait for it to arrive.

Ship it. Less than a grand to ship vs. a grand or more to replace an engine/tranny/rearend. You could end up getting stranded half way home, then have to ship it the remaining distance PLUS have repair costs.

I say ship it also. I drove a '72 I had from Los Angeles down to Florida. Alternator went out in West Texas, radiator went around San Antonio. Memorable trip but could have been a real bummer. I got lucky on that one.

Re: What do I do ?

This time of year with the weather conditions I think I would ship it.

If you intend to drive it, it looks like you will have to most likely replace the tires before starting out. That is an added expense.
They also don't look like they would be worth a hoot on slick roads right now.

Also these rigs almost always seem to develop little troublesome issues after they have been sitting too much instead of being daily drivers. This may not be a big deal in the late spring, summer or early fall but it would be the pits to deal with right now.

That said, If you do decide to fly down and drive back, you can pack any tools you want to take in your "checked" bags on the airlines. Most are charging for checked bags now and all have wight limits before the cost jumps drastically. Having watched my favorite little 100lb redheaded airline gal wrestle with 80 lb bags from big bags R-us onto the baggage carts and having wrestled with them myself on a daily basis It's easy to understand the 50 lb limit and my aching back wishes it was 40.
Don't pack any chemicals though, No WD-40 or other stuff like that. As far as parts, as long as it isn't a carb or fuel pump that smells like gas, no problem.
As far as carry on bags, any tool you have has to be under 7 inches in total length but I don't know Canada's rules on that. Best to just put it all in checked bags.

If I did drive it I would for sure take it in and have a full service done on it and make sure everything was checked out especially the antifreeze.
Make sure that all of the coolant hoses are in real good condition or replace them.

I still vote for having it shipped this time. At least to a city close enough to you that you could drive it home without problems.

Re: What do I do ?

I can get shipped right to here for 1700.00 and I do not think I could fly down an drive it home for that price, but the memory of driving her home would be priceless. And as you say, its Winter and you never know what part is going to decide "I've had enough of this s**t " in the midle of Montana and leave me stranded.

I may send a deposit and fly down in Spring and drive her home.
