So I use cheap bourbon for heat. A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.

I used to have a wood stove in the one shop the other had electric heat that was horrid..

I use an old Dearborn heater- 35K BTU on propane and it does just fine.

Been doing alot of research on this lately, for my needs (900 sq. ft., few nights/wk) I am going with a Dayton G73 electric unit. Radiant natural gas is a good solution too if you have gas. Propane, kerosene, infrared natural gas (ventless) are some other options, all with good and bad traits.
My main concern is minimizing open flame and smell.

Mother nature's in charge of the climate for my shop.I have a 2 car garage,but it's so full of crap mt HHR won't even fit in there.Rain,shine,hot or cold,I do all my work in the comfort of my gravel driveway.

I use a 55,000btu natural gas fired unit heater hanging from the ceiling. Warms it up nicely even when it is -30 outside, I leave it at least 45 in the garage. It is kind of nice getting in a warm car when it is cold out.

Just got this not too long ago. Going up during my break around Christmas
 Sterling 175,000 BTU. Converted from gas to propane.

I have a forced air furnace. 92% efficient propane unit. Just like the one in my house...

my dad has radiant heatunder the concrete in our shop. The water is warmed up in a water heater then circulated through tubes under the floor. This water is constantly recirculated through so there is no wasting.

Like SneakySnake, I use the 'ready heat' jet engine thingie.
Before I got that, I would just start both cars and let the exhaust warm up the garage. But when it got warm, I always had the urge to take a nap.

we used to use 2-3 cords of good ole hot burnin MISSOURA HEDGE wood each winter, that wood will make a stove glow dull red. cheap, and like they say, it warms ya twice, once when ya split it and once when ya burn it!

I tried the jet heaters and a few others that connect to 30 lb propane tanks but all stunk up the shop or made sicker than hell with fumes. Finally settled on a Mr. Heater 45,000 BTU ceiling mount, which heats up the 1,000 sq ft shop perfectly. It is connected to the 300 gallon propane tank that also used to run the house but our neighborhood was converted to natural gas last year so now the 300 gal tank just runs the shop. Got it from Northern Tool and Equipment a few years ago for $425. It works great!

My buddies both have good wood stoves in there shops. Neither one is to big and both are insulated pretty good and stay pretty warm in the cold months.

I now live in Missouri where heat is necessary in the winter.
I am not sure what kind of heater I will use if I can ever get my Dad's cleared out enough to work in it. He has a couple of old round kerosene heaters that might do the trick if I can get them working. Danny
