Anyone Running One Of These?

I am wanting to change out my dual CB antennas for a single stainless steel whip like this one and was wondering if any of you are running one and what kind of results you've gotten out of it?

http://cgi.ebay.com/New-102-Inch-CB-...5#ht_500wt_977

Thanks
Benjamin.

I use to have one on one of my trucks, I liked it for longer range but if the weather was crappy so was the reception

Re: Anyone Running One Of These?

Nothing wrong with a 102, but you will need a spring for the base. You will also need to watch for clearence all the time. If you have a good set of loaded dual's and they are tuned properly you will get better reception.

If your running any additional power, it's hard to tune your SWR's properly with a steel whip.

Re: Anyone Running One Of These?

Kind of a funny story.High school buddy had a lifted ford 4by and mounted a whip on the roof!! He went down one of the alleys in the old part of St. Joe Missouri and hit a light wire.............Said it sounded like some lit an M80 in the cab

Hoe, where you at. It'd be worth it if I pay the shipping. You can ship it in a piece of PVC.

That is a funny story. Theres a friend of mine that has a F*** 4x4 with a 6"+ lift and he has 2 6ft whips mounted on the toolbox. I'm amazed that he can clear power lines around here.

Re: Anyone Running One Of These?

I'd have to measure it to be sure...I used to have it mounted on my K5 blazer on the rear bumper, and would go under the driver's mirror and stay if I needed to get it down out of the way...

I have no problem shipping if that's what you'd like...it also has a spring on the bottom of it...let me pull it out tomorrow and I'll measure it and take some pics of it...

Chuck.

Sweet. I'm probably going to mount it to the bumper too. The spring will be great too. I cant wait to see it.

Thanks
Benjamin.

Re: Anyone Running One Of These?

My friend has one on his jeep, and it doesn't work as well as my two antennas but it does get us by.

Re: Anyone Running One Of These?

Here's the low down on mobile CB antennas. A 102 in whip is pretty good for transmit gain, but they suck bad for receive because they have no noise rejection at all. They also can lead easily to a fregged final output transistor in the radio because the little screw in hot to the antenna goes bad frequantly and no on enotices till the radio stops transmitting, and this happens more frequently in harsh conditions where it rains or snows a lot.

I have had and used pretty much every single antenna over the years and now only use the Wilson base loaded antennas like the 1000, 5000, or even the little wil. These have great noise rejection, and thru reports from others who i talk to they sound superior on transmit to a 102in whip and pretty much everything else as well. I have a 1200w linear that doesn't frag a 5000, and it works great thru the 1000 too. I have two CB's that cost about $400.00 each so need a good reliable antenna, and for me thru 30 years of talking on the CB and being a HAm radio operator, they work the best.

I use the mag mount ones if I can so I can take them off if needed to either keep them from being stolen or to get clearence overhead.

Re: Anyone Running One Of These?

BTW, dual antennas are only good forward and backwards, not at all to the sides. A single antenna of any kind is omni directional, bot bi directional like a set of dual antennas. Which is why the truckers all use dual antennas, they only want to transmit and receive forward and backwards since all the talking they do is on the freeway. Duals suck big time off road.

You can get a 102in whip to tune, but need the right length spring, and the right spring....all springs that are sold as a 102in whip spring are not the right spring for it. And the spring is the weak point of a 102 in whip set up. Actually the coax mount to the spring is it's weak point.

Re: Anyone Running One Of These?

Ok, so if I'm interpreting what you've said right, a single whip or duals like mine are a poor choice of antenna?

I like the look of duals or a whip. I mainly use my CB when I'm on the interstate or when I meet my dad at the truckstop to find out how far out he is. And that's not that often.

I have an 8ft fiberglass whip, would that work better than a stainless one?

Re: Anyone Running One Of These?

I'v notaced the dual whip directional issue that's one of the reasons that only one of mine is hooked to the cb, the other is hooked to my radio and it gets awesome reception, the last time I had duals hooked up was for cat and mouse (CB tag) and that was so it was easer to locate the mouse
