Question Which 16" rims (& tires) interchange with the 16.5" rims?

I have been trying to search for an answer to this question, but have not come up with anything specific...

The '79 G30 has the 8-lug rims with 800R16.5 tires (aka 8R16.5 / 8.00R16.5) with dual rear (duallies).

The multi-part question is:

Which Chevy rims interchange with the Chevy 8-lug (& did the Chevy 8-lug rims change after a certain year point)?

What year range of Ford or Dodge possibly bolt up?

And what tires combine with the rim to are the best interchange, avoiding the possibility of the duallies rubbing?

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Bits of info that I have found:
(?) The Chevy rims have small center hub openings when compared to other manufacturers
(?) Ford center hub openings are larger, but at some point recently the 8-lug rims for Ford changed. Not sure if that means the later or the recent style is a possible choice.

I can not find any specifications/measurements for the different 8-lug rims to compare...

I would greatly appreciate any help on this!

~ Steven

Re: Which 16" rims (& tires) interchange with the 16.5" rims?

chevy wheels did not change, all are 8x6.5 bolt pattern

ford wheels changed to a 8x170mm bolt pattern in 1999

dodge wheels are still 8x6.5

your 8.00x16.5s new measure 28.3"......225/70/16 are the same height but you'll have trouble finding a 8 or 10 ply for your dually.........

you can use 215/85/16,225/75/16,235/85/16,and 255/85/16 without any tires rubbung in the rear and get your heavier plys

hope this helps you

Thumbs up Re: Which 16" rims (& tires) interchange with the 16.5" rims?

Excellent info! Thank you thinair!

So, the Ford 1998-older rims are 8x6.5 also?
Can you confirm the info about Ford centers being larger and fitting Chevys?
Essentially, that would mean that Ford (pre-1999) rims fit Chevy, but not the reverse (Chevy rims ->Ford).

What about Dodge rim centers?

Yes, ford till 1998 will interchange and bolt right up to a Chevy or supposedly, any 8 lug Dodge. All Chevy to 1997 I think are 8 lug on 6.5in bolt circle, and so are all Dodge 8 lug from what I hear. I hope this is true as well because you see a lot of Dodge and newer Chevy 8lug alloys for sale cheap on CL.

Is this alos true with the single wheel as in non dually wheels? Like for instance, are the Chevy wheels still 8 on 6.5 to this day? If so, that opens me up to finding a cheap set of nice stock alloys for the 74 C20.

I am sure that my buddy had newer(2003?) burb wheels on his '82 Truck. Although, I do not remember if the truck still had the original spindles and rearend...

Hopefully we can get some examples of some swaps others have done between years and possibly different makes.

The other thing those alloys have going for them , other than they are about half the weight of a steel wheel, is they are about twice or three times the load rating of a same size steel wheel. They also give you better handling, stopping, and acceleration because of their weight. I had a set of 3/4ton running gear on my 1974 Ramcharger, and with the steel wheels and 38in SuperSwampers, it got 9mpg, when I switched to same size alloys, my mileage went to 11, and the accelleration and braking improved noticeably. Same thing happened on my 1993 F150 4x4 when I went from the 15x10 steels to a set of 15x10 alloys.

BTW, tyre wheel combo with a steel wheel was 21lbs heavier with the steel wheel! PER WHEEL! That is a lot of reciprocating mass.
