I couldnt save the poor thing...
I know its a little late for it, but its time for some post traumatic cash for clunkers sadness.
So I went up to one of the many dodge dealerships in phoenix, az. I was following my roommates there in my truck so they could have a ride back while it was getting tinkered with. Well, my roommate was window shopping at all the new trucks and their options, and we were floating around the parking lot in a golf cart, looking around. Well, she found one she wanted to caress for a moment, and as she was doing that, I looked over, because I heard the tall tell sounds of a carburated motor not wanting to start. Well, Sadly to say If i would have found a way to save the poor thing from death I would. It was a 69 chevy blazer, in all its 4x4 glory, and yeah it was a little rough around the edges, but it was in overall good shape. It had super swampers, and a brush guard from what i could see.Sadly again, I asked the sales guy how much they were selling it for because everything has a price. He said "Oh, it belongs to the government now." Befuzzled at the time and not fully understanding the cash for clunkers hipocracy, and asked the dumbest question ever "Why is that?" and he thoughtfully stated that "it was someones piece of junk" and that it had the god awful yellow tag on it for disposal. I asked how much I could give the dealership to take it off of their hands, and he said "we cannot sell it. the government already got their crumby fingers all over it". I got a little teary-eyed, and sighed deeply then went on with my day. So, Im not sure if he was jerkin my chain or not, because I still dont fully understand how that whole cash for clunkers went, but i tried saving it from death.

In theory, couldn't someone buy it once the motor was trashed?

Cash for clunkers was only suppose to apply up to 84 so it would have been to old too qualify he probally had his own plans for it and didnt want to lose it to you

- that was one of the stipulations that it couldn't be over 25 years old.

Re: I couldnt save the poor thing...
I am in the auto salvage business and we bought about 500 of the clunker trade ins. There was some really nice stuff traded in. The dealers were only allowed to sell the cars to "authorized disposal centers." However, once we have them we are allowed to sell parts...everything except the engine block (which is already ruined.) At this point the dealers shouldn't still have any sitting on their lot. They were supposed to dispose of them as soon as they received the rebate money from the government which for most was back in October. Sounds a little suspicious but if it really is a clunker, find out who they are selling it to and then you can try to buy parts from them.

Re: I couldnt save the poor thing...
I've been reading posts on your forum for probably 2 months now and just waiting until I got the chance to snap some pictures before I registered. Saw this post and had to register just so I could comment. It got me outside to take some pics to which I'll post next.
So I was in Afghanistan over the summer and while we were searching used car dealerships for VBIED's (car bombs) we came across some cars that had been registered in California as late as May '09 and then were turned over to this cash for clunkers program. They had matching VINs so obviously hadn't been through the correct channels for destruction. Just makes me wonder how many people are making money on the side because of this program. They were all smaller cars easily shipped by container, but I could see larger vehicles being sold off too Blake |
