Hurst 3 speed shifter
Hello All, need some help again. I am planning on removing the column shifter off my 68 GMC and going to put in a floor shifter. It really took me a long time to decide whether I wanted to do this. My last truck a 72 GMC had a column shift and I thought it was the coolist thing. That was fifteen years ago. Now my boy is coming due this summer to get his license and I remember those days of that good old shifter jamming. Anyway, has anyone gone threw this install and how was it? This is the one I plan on installing.

Re: Hurst 3 speed shifter
It's been a while but the install was not bad. The instructions were well written and easy to follow. Probably the toughest part is talking yourself into cutting the floor. I went column to floor, then 14 years later back to the column. I did a few regrettable things when I first inherited my truck but this was one of the biggest. I wish I'd known how to adjust it back then.
I know you didn't ask for it but my opinion is don't do it. Unless your son really thinks floor shifters are cool, just sort out the adjustment and eliminate the chance of "Jamming". After you read the FAQ ask your son what he thinks. You never know he might echo your sentiment about "column shifters being the coolest thing". If you decide to use the Indy shifter. Keep all the parts you take off together. It will be a lot easier to put back on the column if that day ever comes. Craig

Re: Hurst 3 speed shifter
I'm with Barebone. (& mama). I bought a Hurst shifter for a 4 speed that was in my 58. I bought the cheaper Indy shifter because I wasn't going raceing. I just wanted a good crisp shift. It was a piece of junk. It was hard to find gears & was clumsy shifting. I sent it back. With a column shifter in good condition you will find gears & have less hang up problems then with that floor shifter.

Great, now you guys got me thinking. I already thought about the floor cutting ( an old guy once told me, never do what you can't undo) . I do appreciate you opinions thanks.

Re: Hurst 3 speed shifter
I wouldnt do it....really if ya think about it, and your son thinks bout it. How many kids know what a 3spd on the column is lol. much less understand how it works! its really cool, if you wanna speed shift it. might as well scratch that one out. but its a really sweet cruizer if ya get it done right.
one thing, anybody know where to get bushings for the linkage mine are shot i thought i saw some fs somewhere (read above post). but forgot wat it was

Re: Hurst 3 speed shifter
One thing I did remember when I had my other truck, friends would ask if they could borrow it because they thought it was an auto, but then when I would say can you drive a three on the tree. The look on their faces was
They never asked after that. May be a good incentive to keep stock...hhmmm. |
