Will 71-72 5 lug axles work in 70 rearend???
I'm wanting to convert my rearend to 5 lug. The rearend in my 70 is the wide version. My Q is will 5 lug axles out of a 71 or 72 fit without modification. I found a good deal on a 5 hole coil rear. My rear is a 3.73 posi, thats why I just want to swap axle shafts. Also will the Drums off the 71/72 fit once I change the shafts. Thanks for the input.

Re: Will 71-72 5 lug axles work in 70 rearend???
Thanks for the replies. Found this rearend out of a 72 that the guy is parting out(Blown Motor). Its a 3.08 open he thinks. He said he'd take 50 bucks for it. I pulled the drums off and they dont look worn much at all. He thought they were replaced a couple of years ago. I figured its worth the $ for the drums alone. Looks like i'll be picking it up sat.

Re: Will 71-72 5 lug axles work in 70 rearend???
ECE does indeed have 5 lug 30 spline axles for 63-72 12 bolt rears...$279.00/pair. If you're already running a 3.73 posi thats a great combo...later, when you get tired of drum brake fade, the rear calipers from a late 70's cadillac seville will fit your housing, and they have the emergency brake built into them... CPP has the rotors and caliper brackets which will fit those new 5 lug axles.
Another plus is you'll be running a standard 5x5 lug pattern; everybody and his brother sells wheels that will fit that setup!. |
