What's the most weight you have hualed in your bed?

Today I put my truck to work for the first time since I got it running over the summer. I needed some gravel so we went to the local quarry and got some 3/4" con. mix. I wasn't sure how much to have loaded so I just watched as the loader dumped it in and waved when it started to squat good. When I returned to the scale this is the ticket I got:

If you can't make it out it reads:
empty: 4780 lbs
full: 8300 lbs
gravel: 3520 lbs

Here are some pics of the load and how it sat full:

I was surprized that it still accelerated pretty good and I could barely tell that I was loaded with nearly 2 tons.... until I stopped, that took a little longer than normal. The most noticable thing was that it rode alot smoother. So I was wondering how much you guys have hauled before. I know when I was a kid my mom and me went and got somewhere around 5500 lbs. of gravel in my truck and we barely had any steering.

My truck only hauls ass

I waaaaaaaay overloaded my S-10 once with broken cement chunks, bricks, and blocks. With a 2.2L I could barely go up a hill

I know the feeling I had a ranger with a 2.3L, 3.45 gears, and 31" tires. I loaded it heavy enough one time that the axle was on the frame. I ended up frying the clutch because I could barely make it up a hill on a dirt road. after that I put in 4.10's, that was the best mod I ever did on that truck.

Re: What's the most weight you have hualed in your bed?

I had a old 69 C-10 CST Coil Spring truck with a leaf pack as a overload type thing,
I use to haul 5 55gal barrels of race fuel regularly.
Plus i hauled 2 yards of gravel ones. The truck look it no problem, but the lack of enough brakes is a whole nother story.
One tough truck

Re: What's the most weight you have hualed in your bed?

I had about 2772 pounds of cinder blocks in my 97 1/2 ton and I had to pull over a mile or so after I left Menards to make sure everything was ok. I had a heck of a time stopping and it felt weird driving.
I need some beefer springs.

I want to get rid of my Blazer and get a 67-72 3/4 ton for hauling stuff.

Re: What's the most weight you have hualed in your bed?

I loaded down my 68 LWB with a 250/3spd with pea gravel to the point it started spilling over the sides. Knocked it down from the edges into the corners to keep it in the bed and crawled my way home about 25 miles. Wasn't too bad, but the truck was all over the road, felt like a boat with a loose steering cable.

The payload for one of those trucks is a little over 1,600lbs, so she was over 1,100lbs overweight

2 atv's on a 10ft trailer with camping gear was a bit much for my '93 S10 blazer... That thing was all over the freeway. My '70 pulls it and you can't even tell it's there.

Re: What's the most weight you have hualed in your bed?

We once put 2 full skids of shingles scooted all the way up to the cab of my 3/4 ton 69 Chevy with a flatbed. They were supposedly a ton each but I don't know.

The guy in the new Ford 3/4 ton who couldn't get away with one skid was unhappy. Of course he couldn't get the skid/pallet up to the cab so the distribution was wrong but it was a laugh my $250 truck walking off w/ 2 ton and his new one not going w/ 1 skid.

I guess a $250 truck can haul more because if it dies you lose less. It lived though.

Anybody want to chime in on what a skid/pallet of 3 tab shingles weighs? Or two?

Re: What's the most weight you have hualed in your bed?

Not abused my truck but I used to seriously overload my 91 Isuzu trooper when we were first doing up our house in France, it got run down 900 miles from here to there in a couple of days full to the roof with tools, building materials, furniture etc, had bags of cement chucked in the back until it was virtually sat on the bump stops, I hauled a dozen 8'x4' sheets of drywall on the roof, bent the gutters a touch that one. On one occasion I had so much timber inside and on the roof I could only get uphill in first and thats with a torquer 2.8L turbo diesel. The back seats were out pretty much permanently.

best I can document is 218o lbs of scrap parts and some frme rails parts its one of those hings that you just keep adding anothe smal piece and it didn't look bad.....My truck is bagged with a c notch and cupped LCA...but it is a C 10 ....after that it hauled 5 cord of fie wood....but like everyone said manual brakes are an issue power to come this spring......

Re: What's the most weight you have hualed in your bed?

My truck is a 1/2 ton. My tires are rated to 1850 pounds.
1850*4 = 7400 pounds. The truck weighs 5000 pounds with me in it.
That leaves 2400 pounds before my tires are not safe.
I've gone to 1200 pounds in the bed hauling trap rock for my driveway. In my little half ton I don't like going much more than that. I don't think the axels can handle much over that.

You guys hauling over the weight limits of your truck - make sure you don't run in to anybody. Lawyers would love to get on a case like that.

Re: What's the most weight you have hualed in your bed?

My dad always had LWB 3/4 ton GMC's. '64, '72 and a '76. The '72 I remember him regularly hauling over 2 tons with it on the farm. I also remember having to replace a leaf spring on it on two seperate occassions.

Re: What's the most weight you have hualed in your bed?

D powers funny you say that my dad back in the day (early70's) had a 65 C 20 custom Dually..with coils and a oak flat bed with racks...he hauled his 8N ford tractor with attachments and seed, tools, chains and what ever in it all over the place for his contractor buisness....the truck was a 4 speed I6 truck...I restored the tractor a few years ago and still have the home made trailer with no brakes and a funny flip style hitch.....I wouldn't tow it behind my F350 never mind one of these trucks...but I guess men where men and women liked it that way!!

In case your woundering I started a restore on the truck I went away for awhile (a month or so working) and when I came back it was gone..never to be seen again...it really hurt my feeling since dad bought it new and the build date of the truck was my Bday!!

Re: What's the most weight you have hualed in your bed?

I've pretty much filled the bed with gravel and sand before in my C-20.
Steering got a little light with that much weight.
I need to get LT tires the next time around, the P rated tires were hating it.

Several years ago I hauled a load of topsoil 45 miles over the mountain. Had the guy load as much as it would hold. Didn't get much over 45 mph, steering was light and brakes were just fair.

Took it to the county yard and weighed it -- 11,300#. Drove home, emptied the truck, went back to the scales and it was 5,300#.

Six thousand pounds, an even 3 tons.

Nothing broke and we got home safely, but I'm older & wiser now.

That's a lot of bull!

And at 40, an old one too...

So why do you drive him around every day... just turn him loose in the pasture with the cows.

Re: What's the most weight you have hualed in your bed?

Don't know the exact weight, but I know the long bed fleet will hold 2-1/2 yards of dirt if you scrape it off flat. Did that along with my trailer that is also made from a long bed. Fun going in and telling the yard guy that I'm there to pick up 5 yards and all he can see is the front of the pick-up.

Re: What's the most weight you have hualed in your bed?

I thought of another time that I had it loaded heavy, was when I was 17 I hauled 60 sheets of 1/2"x12' sheets of drywall from reno to truckee. I looked it up on google and each sheet weighs 81 lbs, so that is a total of 4860 lbs. Up there its about 6000' elevation and the trip is about 30 Miles with 6-7% grades, with the old 351 v6 it held 65 MPH the whole way (max cruise speed with 4.56 gears) and felt good and solid.

I took my GMC short bed (leaf springs) to the dump one time full of plaster and lathe I had pulled off the walls in my house. The stuff had been rained on for 2 days. When i pulled on the scales I was just under 10,000 pounds.
