79 front suspension.Direct bolt on?
Hey guys.
I have a 67 chevy LWB with a manual drums and of course 6 lug wheels.I would like power disk and 5 lug. I have the chance to get any chassis parts I need off a 79 chevy truck for free.(my cousin is putting the body stuff on his 78 4wd. I read that I can bolt the whole cross member up.What about steering though? Can I still use the manual steering box from my 67 with the 79 components? Any help would be awesome. And also does anyone know the bolt pattern of gm's 5 lug?I need to see if they have weld pro stars for it.

Thanks alot.
I am picking the truck up thursday. The deal is.I have to take the front clip off,and the bed and doors.I get to keep the rest. The rest being the rolling chassis, cab, motor and trans. The motor is a blown up 305 with a autotrans.(Alot of stuff off of it will be going on the 350 going in my 67. I am going to order a rebuild kit from pst for the front suspension.Possibly some dropped spindles and springs. As well as new brake calipers, pads, rotors, etc.Should be like a new front end! Will get pics off the process.

Never thought of that, I have a spare 79 sitting out back.
What are you going to use for the back axles?

For the rear axles I am probably going to go with early classic's 5 lug axles.I am also going to have 3:90 rearend gears and a posi installed at the same time. Plus I get all the rally's off the truck to.Woohoo! Yes the 79 4wd's where 6 lug.I don't think there any GM 5 lug 4wd's.This is a 2wd though.

I had bad luck with PST. Terrible customer service. Do a search and you'll find it's not uncommon. I would just recommend getting any parts you need from your local parts store, probably cheaper overall this way.
I've got a 77 on mine. I used the power steering, but you should be find with non p/s. I used the 67 crossmember, but you can also just slide the 79 crossmember right in - you'll just have to enlarge one of the bolt holes on both sides. Good luck.

yes it will highboy. there are only 2 bolts that have to be drilled/enlarged and i think they are at the rear of the crossmember. alot of members have done this and have told others about it. i am putting 71 disc brake set up on my 70

just use the whole crossmember. that way you won't have to pull the tie rod ends and swap them over. unbolt the crossmember with all the steering linkage still attached and put it under the truck. be sure to get the brake lines and booster/master cylinder assembly too.

Im new to this 'conversion' stuff...what about the steering box, power steering pump, and the steering column from a '76? Will they also bolt up to a '70? This truck ('70) has a 250 6 cyl....
Please help...and as always.....THANKS!!!

i'm not sure about the steering column, but the power steering pump is set up for a long water pump. you will have to switch the brakets over to short water pump style. the box should bolt right in. i'm not sure about the pitman arm though. it might work. you may have to buy a power steering pitman for your year truck.
