Red/Hugger/Firebolt Orange The Same Color???

I noticed mixed descriptions of my paint color and I am curious whether someone can shed more light on the subject.

My Build Sheet calls out paint code 458, and reads W-HOR-W-HOR (I assume Hugger Orange).

My SPID calls out paint code 458 and Reads WHT & RED ORANGE.

The 72 Truck Data Book calls paint code 458 Deluxe Two-Tone with White and Firebolt Orange.

Why three names for the same color? Does anyone have an original window sticker with this color combination? I am curious what color name was used on it.

Thanks!!

The code # is what matters. The same "Hugger" color was listed as carousel red on Pontiac's and Monoco Orange on Corvettes. Never heard of firebolt....I will have to check some of my Dads old paint books. Firebolt would be a good name for it....

Here is the Truck Paint Color page from the 72 Truck Data Book that shows "Firebolt" Orange. I had never heard that name before reading this.

I've never heard of Firebolt orange either, and I always thought that "red-orange" was not the same as hugger orange, but I know that carousel red IS the same as hugger orange.

Re: Red/Hugger/Firebolt Orange The Same Color???

I know this is an old thread but I came across this truck on EBay with the 458 Paint Code and it says "Special Paint" on the spid which made me wonder why the paint was special. The drivers door latch and screws are painted Orange and they weren't normally painted from the factory. I was researching 458 Paint in the site search and came across this thread. This truck is a St. Louis build.

Re: Red/Hugger/Firebolt Orange The Same Color???

Great info here and interesting to see different names for the same GM paint codes.
Different names for truck colors from the many paint suppliers?
Does the factory model year determine the proper name of the GM truck colors.
A SPID glove box label may have two different color names for the same color code.
Did separate factory production plants label, print and describe them differently?

Re: Red/Hugger/Firebolt Orange The Same Color???

good question, Greg. I don't see anything special about the paint other than the latch.

The different names are generated by the auto maker's marketing dept. from model to model and year to year. The code is what matters.

Re: Red/Hugger/Firebolt Orange The Same Color???

Here's a Trim tag from a US Bonneville done in Carousel Red, and it shows the Ditzler color (926-99616) right on the tag, as it was a special order on the B-Body, so that should remove any ambiguity on that one!
