radio antenna

Hey guys I put an aftermarket replacement radio in my truck, everything is hooked up correctly, but it gets awful reception. The radio is one with knobs that are made to look like a factory replacement. The truck had an A.M. radio from the factory and I am beginning to wonder if the antenna that is on the truck is for A.M. only and not helping the F.M. signal? Has anyone heard this?

Re: radio antenna

I wish someone knew the answer to this...I was wondering the same thing:
Will the antenna that came originally hooked to a AM only radio work on an AM/FM radio?

Re: radio antenna

I have a CD player hooked up to my original antenna and the FM works fine.

Re: radio antenna

I wish mine worked ok, but I am getting a signal but it is going b/w stereo and mono and driving me crazy. I guess I just need to try an aftermarket one to see if it works.

Re: radio antenna

Do your radios have an Antenna Trim screw? Some radios have a pot in their electronics that can be "Tuned" in for the antenna towork effectively. However, I have swapped radios and never changed the antennas, before---W/O issue. If you are curiuos swap out the antenna, It is possible that your new radio is more sensitive to any faults that you may have on the old antenna.

Re: radio antenna

Don't know if this helps, but our stereo in the shop has an aluminum antenna and occasionally it will fall over and touch the track for the garage door. We found if the antenna touches anything BUT aluminum it will mess up the reception. I know that its not a car stereo, but maybe there is a crack or a bare spot in the antenna wire that is touching steel somewhere under the dash.
