SWB or K5

Ok guys, I may be getting a 84 LWB 4x4 soon

I know I dont want to keep it LWB, so heres my thoughts / question

I have the stuff to make it SWB, but my brother also has my old K5 that could be gotten back for a song

So who has had both & what did you like & dislike about them, which would be your choice as a non street driven rig ?

Thanks, Matt

Man that's tuff. I am prone to K5s though only owned 3 of them and kick myself for getting rid of all them. Keeping my eyes peeled for another one. I have only had long boxs till my extended cab think they looked better lifted n liked all the room in back lol.

If your making it strickly into an off road ride, I'd strongly consider the longer wheelbase.

What's the final set up going to be?
1tons, doubler...etc?

Re: SWB or K5

If its a non street rig then why not a bobbed long bed? But also same as above. It's a major player in what to consider.

And in my shortbed truggy, I want to extend the wheelbase by pushing up the front because being have ridden and watching both types you have mentioned the longer wheelbase seems more stable.

Re: SWB or K5

Well its not going to anything radical, just a semi stock toy to go play in
Im leaning towards the SWB cuz I already have the stuff

I dont want a LWB is too long to turn

Re: SWB or K5

ive wheeled a 70 gmc lowb and it wasnt horrible. the length does get you on some situations. turning was definitely a situation i found to keep coming up.

i also have a k5 now and i find there is a great difference in length ...literally. i can turn around in place i never thought i could. which i can credit to the wheelbase. between the two i would have to say that the swb does have its advantages over a lwb but id also have to agree that a lwb feels more stable as the lift gets bigger. like mentioned above, bobbing the bed would definitely help out the length problem without sacrificing stability and would have a cool factor to it.

Re: SWB or K5

I'd build the K5 for off road and use the LWB to haul it there...

Re: SWB or K5

You'll suffer more due to the 'break over angle' from a lwb than anything.

What's the tire size you intend on running?

Re: SWB or K5

For starters 31's, but I would like to do a lift & get some 35's or something close when I get the money

Bobbing the bed wont change the wheel base any so there is no point for me, plus I dont want to cut up a perfectly good bed when I have a short step bed that just wants on the truck lol

Re: SWB or K5

Then I would say for what you what a shortbed would be great then. A stock short and 31s work well, on mine and a friend has a short bed with approx 4in and 35's and does great. Goes the exact same places as another friend with a 6in and 35s on a blazer.
