Finally Broke The 7's!!!
Finally got the truck in the 7's. 7.94 @ 86.50 first pass then backed up with a 7.96 next pass. Then started changin up some stuff and slowed down. Gotta rember to take my thumb off the 2-step/line-loc button. lol. Need to figure out how to get another tenth or two outta it so it'll stay in the 7's once i put my cage in. Any ideas? Chris.

Nice work man. Maybe some bigger headers and a little weight reduction or relocation would get you a few tenths.

Thanks yall. Already have an aluminum radiator, electric fans and water pump. Bumpers, tail gate, bench, radio, inner fenders, heater, stock gas tank, bench seat are all gone. pretty much got all the wieght out it i can get without cuttin or hackin it up. Still need to relocate battery to the bed. Probably gonna go lexan on the rear window once the cage gets put in. Gonna run a steel cage due to money and ease of installation. Bigger headers might do it some good, thinkin about switchin to a victor jr intake. Chris.

vr. jr intake would help alot with your set up, you certainly have the ci and enough cam to pull it, do that with some bigger headers and you could easily pick up a few tenths if not more.

Not to sure what your 1st gear is but IMHO, Your probly shifting fast 1-2. i would go with something like 4.88 rear and let 1st last a little longer. May be worth a few .10's maby not. I would definatly go with a single plane intake. The diffrent gear and single plane would allow you to leave at a higher RPM.

Maybe one day it'll be 7's in the 1/4, lol. Guess I'll be lookin for a victor jr at the swap meet this weekend. 1st is a 2.52. Running 28x11.50 M/T ET Drags. Leaving at 5200 on the 2-step now. Had 4.88's in it last season and the 60'ft was around 1.71-1.72, was goin the the traps at 5000. With the 5.38's it's know 1.60-1.62 , traps at 5600 and the motors seems a whole lot less stressed and stonger than last season so think i went the right way with the gear. Grabbing gears at 6200. IMHO, the more gear u can put in a stick car, the better you are. Thanks for the idea's, keep em comin. Chris.

once you do the victor jr and headers id also start looking at a bigger carb. you got a lot of air moving threw that motor and a 750 will be choking it ! you could also pull that oil pan off and put a crank scraper on it, might give you a few hp at the top end. and what about a 1 piece aluminum driveshaft ? ... just my 2 cents

I wouldnt take weight out of the rear end of these trucks. Loosing traction will not help you pick up any time.

Could he possibly get away with removing weight from the bed since he's gonna have to put in a cage/rollbar soon anyway?....I think it would offset the weight of the cage/rollbar.

I'd take some gear out of it.You have to remember 406's are torque motors. My old 406 ran in the 8.0 range all day with a 3:73 rear gear on Dunlop 275/60-15 radials. 1.76 - 60' 3950 lbs, on pump gas. I bet you can get 2-3 tenths more out of it. And I say a big yes to crank scraper and windage tray. My .02 Good luck

Bigger carb seems like a good idea, checked Holley's online carb calcutor and they recommended between 830 to 950 so I'll be checking into that. Have thought about taking out the bed floor but want to keep some wieght over rear end. Already have a windage tray and rear pan baffle. I'm goin to keep the gear where it's all, maybe go to a 5.57. Went to the track a while back with a 3.73 and 60ft's were in the 2.20 range. With a manual, the rpm's drop real fast once you let the clutch and the more gear you have the sooner the motor gets to make power. With a auto, the motor stays on the convert stall until it catches up with the speed your at, or atleast that's my understanding. If anybody's wonderin why I'm tryin to stay in the 7's once I put the cage in, it's so I can run with these guys, http://www.classicgearjammers.org/ , 4 & 5 speed stick shift only bracket racing. Got my tail handed to me last season trying to footbrake againist a bunch of autos. LOL. Thanks for the idea's and keep 'em coming, Chris.

first off is this a rear trailing arm suspension if so.
loose the bed floor and any weight you can like inner box sheet metal. then start reading the suspension forum.. very easy to make these trucks hook.. i would not wory about loosing weight in the rear. there are trucks with big blocks up front hooking very well and they have the weight taken out from the back. weight is weight were ever it comes from. it just takes a little reading and no how to make it work. definatly need bigger carb and higher flowing manifold. might even benifit from a 4 hole 2" spacer this usally creats more torque and hp down low. once you open up the top end you will need larger headers. look for 1.75 primaries and 3+ collector. if your runnig open header you may even mess with 1' to 3' pipe to tune.. anyways good luck with it all. later andrew K

57- ya make a very good point, completely forgot about that. It's gettin time I start doin some suspension work anyways. Been thinking bout putting a set of cherokee springs up front and seeing if that helps any.
Found a victor jr at the swap meet saturday, pulled an all nighter portin and puttin it on. Slept for about 3 hours and went to the track. First pass ripped the shifter bracker in half, 1/2" aluminum, and put it on the trailer and went home. So no new number this weekend. Headin back to the track friday & saturday. Thanks yall, Chris.

LOL, if I had a dollar for every time somebody to told to put a auto in it, I'd be rich. Got it down to 7.900 @ 87.427, 1.61 60ft with it bustin out on the top end so mph should go up a little more. Pretty sure its running outta fuel. Time to ditch the mechinal and put a holley blue on it. My camera finally decided to work so I'll have a vid for yall soon. Thanks for the advice, Chris.

Not to bad man. IMO, your 1-2 shift and 2-3 shift are way close. Your 1-2 shift was 2 seconds between and at about your 60ft mark. I would look for holding your 1st and 2nd gear a bit longer. (Gears) I would like to hold on to 1st for a little longer so you could benefit from its pull rather then shift into 3rd so fast. What is your MPH at 1st and 2nd when you shift?

Thanks. I think the 1-2 is about right would be nice if i could spread 2-3 out more so the drop from 3-4 wouldn't be so much. Don't know mph, speedo's not hooked up, but shiftin in all gears around 6400rpm. After watchin that video a couple times, I think its time to do some suspension work. It out hooked good a few times over the weekend, best 60 was a 1.58, but 60's were from 1.58-1.64. Would like to get it more consistent. Here's a video from the last race of last season when it had the 4.88's in it, notice how much more the rpm's drop off the line. Chris.

Tried putting in a set of 6 cyl cheerokee coils, let it off the stands and went straight to bumpstops. Needless to say, they're in scrap pile. Any ideas on other cheap springs that will work? Chris.

IMHO I think your headers are about right. The bigger the header is not always better. You go bigger and you could kill your low-mid level torque which wouldnt be good for your 60' times, not to mention it's 1/8 mile track. I would look @ another carb. Mess with your suspension and try to get your 60' down a little more. Maybe keep the carb you have and try diff. jets.
