Alternator Woes
Up here in Canada the snow is just starting to melt. In about a week the driveway to the garage where I store my '69 GMC will be clear and we'll go for our inaugural drive for 2010.
So anyway, when I parked the truck last fall the it was discharging, but the discharge light wasn't working. The new battery was dead all the time, so I'm drawing some conclusions about the alternator. I have a good working alternator from a '76 GMC, but it has the internal regulator. What would it take for me to transplant this piece into the '69? The '69 has a separate voltage regulator. TFYH

Re: Alternator Woes
This web site offers one solution. You can buy the conversion kit from Either Brothers or LMC.I'm not sure whitch but I bought one a couple of years ago and it worked ok. Good Luck

Re: Alternator Woes
Is the bulb good in the discharge light? It needs to be for the charging system to work correctly. Just went through this on another vehicle. Sounds stupid but its true in my case. Read something about it here on this site a while back also so you might check. I think its for the externally regulated systems only though.

Re: Alternator Woes
you can buy these from classic industries, classic parts of america etc.. about $20 one part plugs into your oringinal volt reg. and the other converts your factory plug to an internal alt plug

Re: Alternator Woes
Thanks guys.
I didn't know that the bulb was so important. Last summer the wiring harness got caught on the steering column and wound around it. I repaired the wires and the truck worked well for a few months, but I'm wondering if my current problems are fallout from the wire wrapping incident.
