Anti-Theft Measures? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I will have to drive my truck from Kansas to Georgia in a few months. It will include one over-night at a Holiday Inn somewhere along the way. What can I do to help insure my truck is still in the parking lot when I get up the next morning? My wife suggested I actual remove a tire and put it on a jack stand. Are there some simplier measures that could actually deter someone who saw my truck as a target. I know a number of members have had trucks stolen. I keep mine in the garage, but I have to get it home for storage before the Army moves me to Italy for 3-years. Any ideas welcomed.

I like to sprinkle .44 mag casings all around my truck and drop an empty bottle of prescription medication!!!

A few, disconnect battery (neg) and use locking device on steering wheel. I have a flat tab (male) on my starter and a cripped connector (female) teaser wire (yellow)going to the starter. I reach up there and unplug it sometimes. Turn the key and no start. Kinda of a PIA to get it on at night or in a hurry. Or, park your truck near your room (bottom floor) and sleep light...

I have a toggle switch under the dash for the ignition. If the switch is off it won't turn over.

remove the coil wire so it won't start, use a brake lock so they can't push the brakes down if they do get it started, steering wheel lock, and a remote battery kill switch would be a good start.

Or just get lojack

I never leave my truck for long, but I had to drive my truck to Sacramento awhile back and leave it and a 16' car trailer attached to it most of the day unattended. It made me kind of nervous to leave them so what I did was run a cable lock around the steering wheel and down around the seat bracket with the wheels turned all the way to the right, then I took another cable lock and ran it around the frame of my truck and then around the tongue of the trailer (I have a locking hitch pin and a lock for the latch of the trailer, but all you would need to do is pull the nut off of the ball and you can hook it to another receiver). I know there are ways around these but most theives are lazy and will move to an easier target....especially if they know that you are in the room right by the truck.

I don't blame you for the concern. I have the 100% sure way not to have it stolen... If you are going for a few days and coming back, leave your truck at home and rent a car to drive there and back. Renting a car is actually not that expensive and you have no worries about your truck. Think about it.

I use a kill switch on my caddy, the problem is that won't stop someone who tows or drags it out of the lot...not much to do there, except make it harder by hooking the steering wheel to the gas pedal or something. As crappy as it sounds, I often don't even lock up my caddy or truck, if someone wants it...they are going to take it regardless....that is why I have insurance.

Also ask the desk clerk where the outdoor cameras are and make sure you park within site of one...did that on a recent road trip with my friends...nice well lit area

I have the steering wheel/brake locking device I plan to use. I will also disconnect the battery. On our last road trip to Minneapolis, our car got broken into near the Mall of America - busted passenger side window out. It was a Sunday, and we were headed back to here to Kansas. the Holiday inn we spent the night at in Iowa let us park our car in front of their door where the clerk could see it. But it had a busted window...not sure I can convince a clerk to watch my truck.

Pull into a parking space that would make it harder to tow, and cut your wheels hard to one side (making it a pain to drag or pull up on a rollback). I know that there's ways around it, but all you can do is deter. Then, take your battery in your room with you. This will keep most thieves from getting too far - too much hassle. You can install quick connects on your battery before you ever leave making that pretty simple.

If somebody wants it bad enough - it's gone. My truck has an alarm, remote entry, blah blah blah - but just about any vehicle can be stolen.

I will say though - your wife has a pretty good idea there. Depending on how worried about it you are, that's pretty tough to beat.

I also have an ignition kill switch in the rarest spot, but that wont stop them from putting it on a flatbed or a trailer. I would run some chains thru the wheels into the rear control arms maybe one on each rear wheel, that way it cant roll. Get a room in the bottom floor and do your best to park it in front of your door. Make sure your full covergae with "Fair Market" value is up to date and hope for the best. Better yet just have a transport company bring it home for you that would defiently be the easiest and worry free way to get it home.

I take my pitbull almost everywhere in my truck when the weather isn't too hot. She get excited when I grab my truck keys! I get compliments on my security system everywhere I go. She looks big and bad but unless someone was hurting me or my family she would prolly just lick them. an alarm with starter interupt if you dont hit the button to turn it off truck wont start also you can get switches that you can place under the so if someone opens the hood it will go off and on sweet thing about going this route to is electric door locks you can get a universal kit and **** the list goes on insurance discount

Leave a GPS unit or a GPS capable cell phone hidden somewhere on the truck.
That way if all other measures are overcome and the truck is stolen, you will know where to send the authorities. Book'em Danno.
Also , somewhere on this message board is a fake flashing dashboard light. It doesn't stop anybody but it does make people think twice. A hidden Line-lock also makes your truck hard to roll away.

When it was stolen the 3rd time he tracked it on his computer and told the police where to go get it. They did and he got it back in 2 hours. Check this out!! I know a company using this and it works awesome, you can find it anywhere if it is stolen, or if your son or daughter uses your truck and you want to know where it is!!! heres mine, i found this one out on accident with my nuetral safety switch. i have a 700r4 in my truck with the neutral safety switch of a 3 speed and the truck will only start if its in the 4th o/d gear, because the nuetral safety switch is in nuetral and when the truck is in park on the neutral safety switch is actually in reverse. only problem is if your foot aint on the brake it will jump and give you a scare. ask me how i know

All those were great suggestions. But the best one in my opinion is to make the trip in one day. Its not undoable! Where at in GA? Ft. Benning?

I really didn't read all of the replies but on my truck I have a dummy coil wire.
It's made from a piece of vacuum hose. Looks just like it belongs. I'm sure a savvy thief could just remove a plug wire and use it to replace the coil wire but it takes time to figure that out. Hopefully enough time for me to catch him in the act. Maybe I'm sick but I always dream of that day.
