Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Scoti the brake upgrade came from Early Classic. It's nothing that they manufacture, it appeared to me to just be a collection of parts they purchase and ship out from various vendors to match the rear brakes made available in the early 70s (73-87???). Since I went with the 5 lug conversion axles my drums match those of the 73-87 12 bolt rear end.

Installing that pivot lug at the top was a real pain in the rear. I wish I would've just cleaned up my existing backing plate and upgraded the shoes and drum. I think that would be possible.

Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

That brake conversion is likely nothing other than replacement parts for the 2 1/2" wide rear brakes that GM went to in around 1975-76. Those parts can be found either in a wrecking yard or at your local auto parts supplier. Nonetheless yours looks very nice.

Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

It's been a while since I updated my build. I haven't got a whole lot done, b/c I've been plagued by home improvements. So lately I installed the Engine, worked a little on the steering and picked up the Cab from my parents and brought it to the house to start some body work. Before I get on the cab though I want to get the transmission in.

Picture of the steering arm and tie rods

I blasted the steering arm and then painted it along with the new moog steering parts.

Last night I got a wild hair and went out to my parents and had my dad help load up the cab on my trailer.

By the time I got home the only strap that was still holding was the middle strap. The cross straps were mostly loose! I was driving slow, but I really should have stopped down the road and checked em.

Thanks guys, Strodder sorry to hear about your truck. My old man was watching so luckily it worked out.

Got the cab unloaded and in the garage. Right now it's on blocks, but I did get a chance to clean the junk out of it. Guess I'll get a DA after it and see what's left. Wish I could dip it and e coat it, but that's probably over the top.

The hoist and some 3 inch channel worked fine.

Looking at the FWD RH Floor panel might need some patching.

Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

If you want to get that cab all cleaned up, abrasive blasting is the only way to go IMHO. That way you see exactly where the rust areas are. Then you just spray it with some epoxy primer and start your panel replacement and body work.

Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

Alright I've had a few jobs going back and forth over the last couple of weeks.

I grabbed the auto trans cross member out of my donor truck and had it out for blast and powder coat.

I got it back and got it installed which allowed me to put in the tranny.

What I did where the transmission tail mounts to the cross member is slot the holes FWD to allow the mount to slide back. Then I drilled a 1/2" DIA hole in the center of the cross member. This hole was FWD of the two original holes from the power glide.

I also have been working on the cab. My dad set a bale of hay on the back of the roof back in the day which left a nice dip above the window. So what I have done so far is take another roof off of the donor truck, it was actually in much better condition than my truck. I set the roof in and I think I may either try to bend the old roof up or if I can't get that to work. I can section a piece from the donor.

The dented roof

The donor roof

Roof off

Here I just set the donor roof on

This is a better look of the dent with the donor roof on.

Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

I have also been working on the power steering gear box. I installed the steering link and all the other steering parts then installed a power steering gear box using CaptainFab's kit. It turned out well, except the first time around it was mounted a little far back and LH inner tie rod was just grazing the frame. So I scooted it back about 3/4 inch and all was well.

Here is the original manual gear box.

This was the first set of holes I drilled, but that was just a little too AFT.

So I actually ended up using the original lower aft hole of the manual box mount and it worked perfect.

Now it has been stitch welded and painted.

I blasted the gear box...

...painted...

...and installed it.

Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

After dinner last night I decided to do some pushing on the cab roof dent. Well with some force from the palm of my hand and using the rear window opening to counter I was able to cleanly pry the roof back into position. Once it actually started to move, it freely went back into position.

Guys appreciate the comments. It keeps me motivated!

So I was pretty lucky with the harness I got with the engine. The guy I bought it from unplugged it from the donor truck as opposed to cutting it. This was really great because I didn't have to chase wires and I could immediately know what wire went to which port on the computer and where the fused wires needed to go to. I did do a sanity check with a continuity tester only to make sure what I thought where the computer wires went, actually did go.

I plan on soldering and shrink tubing the splices once I'm ready. I bought my fuse block from current performance and it has all the necessary connections labeled. I was going to make my own fuse block but for $100 this was well worth it. I also made up a little connection chart diagram to follow when I'm ready. I've been wanting to post it but it's not quite done. I've been planning on making a ls build thread in the engine/drivetrain section but haven't taken the time. I will soon though.

Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

Today I got my driveshaft installed. Took about 5 minutes. I had this made locally from Driveshafts of Tulsa. It ended up being 72 inches long which I think is the longest you can go before requiring a 2 piece shaft.

Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

I'm getting set up for sand blasting and I was needing a cab dolly to move the cab in and out of the way.

I took an old utility cart I had which I was planning on replacing the bed anyway. I removed the wheels, built a flatbed out of 2x4s, plywood and lag bolts and bolted it to the wheels. voila! cab dolly.

Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

Nice work on the dolly!! A great way to recycle from stuff laying around. I wish mine had big tires like that so I could roll it outside. I do have one question. Well you do the panel replacements or hire it out? If you do and use the cart may I make a suggestion (if you haven't already thought of it) mount the cab at the points where it bolts to the truck frame. That will give you access to the inner and outer rockers and most of the floor.
The dolly could be modified to do this as you well know.

Just a suggestion.

Here is an example:
