Hedders?

the great debate.......i have a 402 bigblock....do i yank the stock manifolds and replace with hedders? do they really leak like everyones says? my mechanic is dead set against them

I have headers on my 427.Use the Percy's XX carbon gaskets ,they don't leak

if your mechanic knows what he's doing and uses good gaskets they wont leak, i am completely against stock manifolds

im glad this post came up...are there any shorty type headers for these BB trucks?...im gonna be swapping my engine out soon and was considering headers...but I don't want full length style for clearance reasons.

i got a 72 chevy 402 and i got full length at stock ride height and i got no problem with clearance.. you gotta cut some old exhaust pipe and weld the part the collector bolts to onto your existing exhaust pipe.. i got a set for about $160.. and mine dont leak and i used the gasket it came with.. i just got new bolts and ran a tap in the holes to clean them out.. if you got ac you gotta take your pump outta the way with the power steering pump since they bolt in the header bolts

I've been racing for about 8 years. Never could find a gasket that would last. Several fellow racers and one ex-mechanic/dragracer/parts salesman told me to throw the gaskets away and use the gray hi-temp rigid silicone. Put a bead on it, then snug the bolts up until the silicone touches the heads, let it sit for a couple hours until it hardens up some. Then tighten up the bolts like you would normally. I've been doing this for the last 4 years with no problems. Haven't even lost any ET. Hope this helps.

Headers are great if they are a high quality part. I have hooker super comps on my b.b. and have NO issues with fit and clearance....no gasket issues as well, again good parts, retorque them once in a while and forget about them.
